Technically, the rule says $200 for passing or landing on Go. If read literally, you'd get $200 on the turn you landed on Go. And $200 the next turn when you passed it. None of the people I was playing with thought that was a legitimate interpretation of the rule.

I suppose I should also point out that many fans of board games dislike Monopoly. For example, on www.Boardgamegeek.com it has a rating of 4.42 out of 10. The highest ranked games on that site score over 8. Here's a good summary of why they don't like it:

Interesting article. I like the game, but I think I have to agree with the downsides.

I played Monopoly for the first time in years this past weekend. Although it's a small sample size, that article was spot on. It was a 5 player game. As soon as me and one other guy got monopolies, it was obvious that the game was merely between the two of us. The added mechanics that everyone plays with, even though they aren't in the rules (money on free parking and the granting of immunities) only made the game longer. It didn't change the fact that the two leaders still had a huge lead.

the best strategy is to go after the most landed on lots obviously. Orange followed by Red, followed by Yellow, try to monopolize 1 of these 3 color groups and then its all luck from there. Also you may want to build houses when people are coming around your lots, if you can only build 1 house, build it on the square that is preferably 7 spaces away, if not 7, 6 or 8, if not that then , 5 or 9 etc. After that, it's all luck

In Boolean math, AND is included in OR.

E.g.,:

1 OR 0 = 1

but

1 OR 1 = 1.

I don't play with immunities or money in free parking. So thats not everyone. I mean drunk with my friends we play all the corky rules, but most of the time its a few beers and strict rules and it works into a good game, unlike when people start doing weird ass things with the money

They also talk about a avg 3 hour playtime. I playwith 4-6 players and its usually over in 2 hrs with the longest being 3. I have never played a 4Hr+ game and I have played well over 100 times.

How's this for a varient?

When you land on Free Parking, you get a random deed for free.

This speeds up the early phase of the game.
