What are some of the better ways of including a diagram in a post?

If you don't have chessbase or some similar program, you could use the PGN viewer at www.chesstempo.com in the same way.

I'd appreciate it if people would stop posting diagrams so large that the forums are forced to auto-resize it. It causes jumping while the thread loads which is a annoying. Considering diagrams are going to be a in a majority of threads in this forum, I think that resizing diagrams in advance would be a good standard to establish.

You can change the size at which the forum software starts to resize images, so I don't see how this could work.

Time to add a [FEN] tag to generate chessboards locally rather than using externally hosted images? This is not that hard to do, I am told.

What kind of silly logic is this? You obviously just have to make the diagrams small enough. 100x100 should be fine.

I'm partial to it because I made it, but chessvideos.tv does this:

http://www.chessvideos.tv/chess-diagram-generator.php

Features:

1) Small and compact (3 different sizes to choose from)
2) Move indicator in the bottom left
3) Forum code generated for you
4) Links back to the position, so people can easily view and edit it if they want (optional though of course)

Example:

very cool, I knew something like this existed but couldn't remember this one

However there's no option to, say, paste a PGN game and show the diagram after move 11, which sounds like an important feature.

You sort of can:

Go to our game replayer, and input your PGN:
http://www.chessvideos.tv/chess-game-uploader.php

Scroll to the move you want, then you can click "Copy this position to the diagram generator" and then you can generate the image and paste it into the forums.

OK now that does seem good.

I tried it out though and it seems very buggy

Your input isn't valid PGN. Pawn moves always start with lowercase letters, all other pieces use capital letters (for example, bxc3 is pawn takes and Bxc3 is bishop takes). If you copy/paste the output from a chess program you will not run into this problem.

So in your example... e4 e5 Nc3 would work fine.
