Positional Fun Week One! Positional Fun Week One!

So I thought to try to get a little regular traffic, I'd start posting positional 5 or so positional problems per week. I'll post the diagram with a very short description and a hint hidden in a spoiler box. Yes, this is straight out of Angus Dunnington's book Can You be a Positional Chess Genius?. The first week or two I'll pull random problems from that book. Then use my vast, untouched chess library to bring more.

White sacs some material to increase the scope and position of his pieces.

Spoiler:
Use the light squares, Luke

Very nice idea for an ongoing thread/material swingdoc.

Spoiler:
1. e5! to open the light square bishop and vacate the e4 square for the d2 Knight. 1.. fxe5 2. f5! Bd7 3. Ne4 (oh what a glorious Knight) with a very nice position with definite positional compensation for the pawn minus.

Mucho thematic.

This is also a very typical theme used by white in Benoni structures and black in the KID. (i.e, ...e4! f3xe4 ...f4! followed by sinking a knight into e5. Note how the enemy pawn deprives his own pieces of a central square).

I had an interesting attack against FM Bereolos (of Shakmaty Bereolos blog fame) with this motif on the White Side of an odd Ruy Lopez, but he defended well and won.

First candidate move I saw was e5 because I'm like "wtf, that useless e4 pawn is blocking the entire white army"

Glad to see it was right!

White uses a typical KID maneuver to force a positionally favorable exchange.

Spoiler:
Black can't afford to refuse this offer. Tell us why.
