I was tired of this game 3 months ago and it looks very drawish but I guess I'll just play it out. You can always discover little things if you play drawn endgames out. If someone were to offer me a draw otb and I don't see any losing chances then just play on! I'm already thinking of some swindles involving maybe 36...g5 h4 gxh4 to threaten g5, followed by Rf8 Kg7 Rg8# :P It's a dream but there's a little something left in the game. A game is not drawn until your opponent has proven he knows it's a draw. So until we start repeating positions I'm going to try to make any little progress I can.
It's clear that i shouldn't allow white to play g5, because then i'm caught in a mating net. So i have 3 candidates:
a) 36. ...g5
b) 36. ...h6
c) 36. ...Ra7
of these i like Ra7 best, because it immediately forces him to release my king from the corner. The critical line goes 37. Rf8+ Kg7 38. Rg8+ Kf6 39. h4 h6 40. Rf8+ Kg7 41. Re8 (otherwise i'm completely safe after Be3-f4) Ra1+ 42. Kh2 Be3 = or 42. Kg2 Rg1+ with perpetual check.
Fk, that Ra7 motif again. Don't know why I keep missing it. There is nothing left in this game if I cannot have the 7th rank. And I'm tired of this crap. I'll wait a year to play my next Malkovich game :P
I want to thank everyone for the awesome discussion, which partly reflected my own thoughts, but also showed me where i am lacking in terms of thought process. Of course, i didn't exactly treat it like a world championship correspondence game. I feel i could have analysed more concrete lines if i had invested more time and effort.
It was super awesome to see nearly all the forum regulars chime in. Gives a lot of motivation not to make bad moves.
One of my main weaknesses, of which i'm very aware, is that i evaluate the position and then only make moves that reach the suspected goal. I think the endgame is equal or slightly worse? OK, let's find a solid way to a draw. I must try harder to exploit the trends in the game to successfully play for a win in such positions.
I thought a long time about 32. ...Rc3 (i had even written up a long post with this as my move) but there was something i didn't like about it. I'll see if i can remember it.
