What tournament was it?

So tomorrow will be a busy day. I heading down south (long drive) to get my games analysed by a GM (who gave me a lesson or two in high school). I'll get my games analysed first, then upload a crucial white game for me for the thread.

Afterwards, I'll head to central to play rapid and blitz with some strong players (2000-2200s)

Then at 7:30pm, I'll head up north to meet up with a friend who is playing a grade match. And we'll work on some opening stuff.

That will be about it for 15th July.

My short term plan for my chess is to work on calculation books and building my opening repertoire. My coach seem to think I play positional chess quite naturally and decided that building my calculation discipline will patch things up.

I'll be playing alot of tournaments. Heading down state to capital to play a University Open. Play a local games. Then play a national grand prix weekender event, then another big open in October.I'll try to play alot of big national tournaments, before taking a trip overseas to play more FIDE tournaments.

I feel definitely more motivated now, now that I get to play strong players (I realised in the previous tournament, there were alot of low rated club players who didn't play good strategic chess and that frustration probably contributed to me withdrawing from the tournament)

I'll be trying out new dynamic lines that leads to position rich with imbalances. Namely the Kozul Suicide Variation of the Classical Sicilian Richter-Rauzer line and the Semi Slav (new GM repertoire book coming up = excited!) The point is to force myself into tough dynamic win or lose positions and improve with every game!

On a more annoying note, my backers in poker are expecting me to put in some volume and work, so that will definitely interfere with my chess, so will my law degree (I crammed an entire course last night and did the exam this morning!).

Still would be a pretty nice certificate and useful for resume and free chess.com membership

Some obscure new publisher released a book by the man himself (along with Aloyzije Jankovic) on the Kozul variation, I was super excited... until I got the book and it was edited by a monkey (I think). An absolutely unreadable analysis dump, what a shame. Also I don't have anything good against the f3+Nxc6 lines

Had a session with the GM today who remarked that I play much stronger than when he last taught me (when I was still in high school). To my surprise he believes that I have a creative tactical mind, rather than a solid positional style in which I thought I had (all those Karpov games I studied!). This is in conflict with what everyone else says about my game (all think I'm positional), but given he is a 2600 GM, I will choose to trust him). After looking through my games, he said I'm playing at a 2000+ level, maybe higher, and that I'm capable of playing high level, and all I need is more tournament and more experience to ensure consistency.

Then I went to city then a club up north for more chess! I managed to run into my old chess friends, and discussed about how we can share accommodation costs when we head over to capital to play.

This was the an important game late in the tournament, that I pretty much had to win. I very much played for the win, put pressure and played dynamically. My opponent was a rising 1900 junior who is very dangerous, everyone told me that he was very "hyped up" and alot of there is alot of expectations for him to perform well. However, this game was very smooth for me, and he cracked under pressure.

http://www.chessvideos.tv/chess-game....php?id=102666

The position is very good for me, and I have alot of pressure, and he can't move alot of his pieces. 25. h5 probably isn't necessary, and might not be objectively the best choice. But I thought the possibility of open h- file with Rh1 ideas could possibly come in handy in the future given the weak dark squares around his king, albeit unlikely. Turns out it didn't really matter at all. My central pawn phalanx was overwhelming.

Very interesting game. Excited to see more of these. I was honestly surprised at Bf5 since it just seems to lose on the spot to me. Although I guess the endgame is trickier than I assumed at first glance.

Seems like a very clean game and it wasn't like your opponent just rolled over. You had to take advantage of some of his weaker moves and it really seemed like you did. Nice game!

I'm still waiting for Tex to post some of his games. It seems perhaps you guys are of similar strength and quite possibly at the level I'm shooting for so I welcome more games like this.

Hey guys, it’s been an interesting few weeks with a lot of chess, and now university semester is back on. This will be long thread, because I’m taking a break (or at least lighten my heavy chess schedule) from chess for a few months for my studies and financial obligations.

I self-banned myself from 2p2 for a few weeks (hence no posts) mainly because I was busy preparing for chess tournaments and didn’t want to be distracted. So I headed down to capital to play some tournaments, and it has been a blast, meeting new people and catching up with old friends. I was abit sick after the trip because of not getting sufficient sleep, but I’m alright now.

There was an interesting game earlier last month, where I gave a draw to my opponent in a winning position (up an exchange in the endgame). He was abit hostile and generally trying to intimidate me and I didn’t feel comfortable playing against him. He complained to the arbiter that I was “looking at him funny” and sniffing (I had a cold). So I just offered him a draw to get it over with. What do you guys think?

Unfortunately, I had to part ways with my coach of over a year who took me from a complete patzer to where I am now :P. He was initially abit angry that I got help from another coach during my preparation for a few tournaments back in June and July. I understand his perspective, from his point of view, it was a matter of loyalty. In my defense, we had trouble booking lessons during that time due to the non-chess business commitments and schedule clashes, so I needed help somewhere else. What happened was, I had a lesson or two with my high school acquaintance (who’s now about to be a GM) on my opening preparations and he blogged about my tournament successes. My coach of over a year was unhappy as he believed that that the other guy took credit for my chess improvement. This was a rather unusual situation, as I just thought he would be happy with my improvement. He ended up giving me an ultimatum that I should only have one coach, which I agreed to. A week later however, before our scheduled skype lesson, he said he was too busy with his business (he lives overseas) and can’t coach me anymore, but he insisted we are still on good terms. This is bad timing, especially, when I’m on the cusp of breakthrough in my chess. It makes sense because we have been having trouble booking lessons due to work schedule clashes on his side (with his non-chess businesses).

I also took a few side jobs to finance myself. I’ll be working as a chess coach for a nationally reputed chess school. Originally, I was planning to work for another major organization, but my now ex-coach had a falling out with them, and out of respect and keeping things professional, I decided not to work for them. I’ll also be offering private chess coaching online for beginners to intermediate tournament players. You can pm me for coaching over chess.com or skype. Chess.com is also where I’ll start to predominantly post threads on the opening lines I study and hopefully get good analysis and feedback. I noticed most of the posts on chess.com (by notable players) are mainly just interesting and thought provoking but might not directly contribute to improvement of the players.

Although I’m taking kind of a break, I’ll work on my repertoire whenever I have time. This time, without the pressure of getting my lines ready for upcoming tournament, I can really go into detail into my lines, and have a really strong repertoire by in a year or two, which will be important to any future tournament successes. Here are just some of the highly dynamic and interesting lines that I’ll look forward to be working on:

1.Semi Slav Repertoire (still waiting for the book Grandmaster Repertoire by Lars Schandorff to come out)

2.Kozul Suicide Variation in the Sicilian (Analysis with database, and the book Richter Rauzer Reborn by Kozul himself)

These lines are very complicated and heavily analysed, detailed understanding will be needed. For example, the Kozul Suicide Variation arises after:

1.e4 c5 2. Nf3 d6 3. d4 cxd4 4. Nd4 Nf6 5. Nc3 Nc6 6. Bg5 e6 7. Qd2 a6 8. O-O-O Bd7 9. f4 b5 10. Bf6 gxf6

Some key questions regarding the subtlety in the position that already arise from this position…

When to play …b4 to kick their knight?

When do you let h5 go or try to keep it?

When to search for counterplay along the g-file?

How should what stop Bh6-e3-d4 manoeuvre?

How should white meet queenside pawn advance?

Important themes and ideas like Ra7-e7, Qb6-c5, h5-h4, Qe1-Nd5 (for white) etc. etc
.

Kozul’s book is a huge database analysis dump and not very well edited or presented. However, the information and messy try of variations are valuable for a fanatic who’s keen on details.
Tactical calculation will also be something I’m heavily focused on working on (this is something that I’ll work with books and other resources). In other areas of my chess, such as endgames, I’ll primarily be watching chess base videos with some practice)

I have quite a lot of financial obligations and will be focused on my part time jobs (chess coaching, high school tutor etc.) while also heavily invested in my “professional” poker career (hence why I’m in 2p2). Plan is to dump law degree (lol) and be poker pro, but depends on how my grind goes of course.

So a TLR summary

- Went to a bunch of tournaments (became a CM :P)

- Part ways with coach of over a year

- Taking a break from chess

- Back to studying opening extensively using database, videos and books (after break)

- Back to working on tactics and watching videos on other areas (after break)

- Working as chess coach amongst other jobs

- Try to grind poker professionally as my main gig

I've just started a PGC thread for poker, so I'll be mainly focused on that.

But I'll try to fit in time studying tactics and openings for now. Maybe 1-2 hours a day for the time being...

My major studies at the moment:

"Excelling at Chess Calculation" by GM Jacob Aargard

"Grandmaster Repertoire 20 - The Semi-Slav" by GM Lars Schandorff

I'll also be waiting for a free version of "The Richter Rauzer Reborn" by Kozul and Jankovic, and might go through some chapters of "How to Reassess your Chess" by Silman from time to time.

@The Moocher
At the moment, after a recent tournament I dropped to around 2k after maybe losing 100+ points from my provisional, I was sick at the capital and lost alot of my games to very elemenary (in my opinion) strategic errors. Which is way is way below my CM title's benchmark (It was awarded for a one good tournament performance in a regional event). And It killed my motivation for a while because I was playing very badly. But my K-factor is super high at the moment (40) so my rating is quite volatile. So every tournament I can gain or lose 100-200 points in one go. So if you have a problem with my low rating and you happen to be looking for a coach, I suggest one that have played more tournaments and games then me at a higher standard.

My main aim is to practice on national tournament and club games at high volume while studying books my coach recommend. Before playing a FIDE tournament next year overseas once I got my repertoire sorted out. I don't want to play FIDE rated events for this year because of the volatile rating. So 'll play those when I'm way above standard and can play next year. Also, there basically is no FIDE rated events in my country (or rarely) and I would have to fly overseas...

@The Moocher Do you play chess yourself, what's your rating??

I forgot to mention from my previous post that I'm also doing International Chess School Month 1 to 12 to improve my strategic chess.

The International Chess School, in my humble opinion is very good program and have had alot of good reviews.

*I'm not in anyway paid by the International Chess School to advertise it on this site*

The reviews of this program have been good: "I played in my first international tournament and [obtained] performance of 2344. I have used almost exclusively your materials to attain this level of performance. The quality of the material throughout the course is very high." - Matt Hassen

Even though I've done month one already, I think it is good to go back and repeat to absorb the information fully.

This is just the contents of the first month

I find this quite interesting: http://chessok.com/?p=21207

Notice: 16 hours per week, apparently for 104 weeks.

Maybe the "10.000 hours"-rule is a bit superficial after all, but on the other hand we don't know how many hours went into obtaining 2200 Elo in the first place. Some guys never get to that point despite spending their whole life on the game.

My personal take on it is that there is a physical limit to it: If you cannot visualize the whole board (aka play blindfold chess), you can pretty much do whatever you want and never get past 2200.

I think I talked about this earlier in my forum and posted this link, but I'm not sure about that. This definitely seems pretty possible and I have looked at this in the past. In regards to board visualisation, I think its definitely a factor, especially if it means being able to see deeper in variations - not sure to what extent tho.

Ok guys I'm back up posting this log.

I'm mainly just studying/playing 1-2hrs of chess a day for now until mid-sem break.

My major area I want to improve is my tactical vision.

So today I worked on Jacob Aargard's Grandmaster Preparation - Calculation Chapter 2: Combinational Vision and I will be going through the rest of the book.

The game I mainly looked at in the chapter is the Gormally - Sutovsky, Gibraltar 2005 which Anand remarked as the best game he's ever seen. It's very tactically complicated and has alot of crazy lines.

Any master should be able to play blindfolded (really, any 1600+ player probably can with some practice) but I really doubt many can play without losing strength. However, I have no idea how much strength is generally lost.

You guys read my mind, I was just about to post about blindfold chess. I'm practicing blindfold chess because it's good for piece visualisation, an essential skill for calculation. I will be playing blindfold games in with a friend, he's club player level, I often beat him blindfolded! The key is to play positional openings and have a solid plan. But I'm starting to want to play tactically complicated games blindfolded and push my visualisation skills to the limit.
