How ridiculous to pull out of a tournament at the last minute because of a match seven months in the future. Now I have someone to root for in the WC match anyway (not Karjakin)

7 months will pass by quickly. If he doesn't want to have to make the choice to forego using his preparation and be less prepared for the event or use some of his preparation for it (wasting it before the world championship match), then he doesn't have to.

It's his prerogative.

Last minute can be construed as being a bit disrespectful though. Would you have felt better if he made the decision a week earlier?

He should have just put a line into the agreement that participation was contingent on not winning the Candidates. Seems like a no brainer to me.

Couple of questions from a casual chess fan:

Any idea as to when the venue will be set?

Safe to assume somewhere in Manhattan?

Any idea how easy it will be to go? If I wanted to check it out for a few hours one day without spending a ton / waiting in a long line, is that possible?
