My wife and I loved this series. When I first met her she challenged me to chess game. She played the queen's gambit. I accepted.

posted this in another thread but a good seris im only 5 eps in. got damn, chess is so complex, will it ever be like 95% solved? whats the closest you think humans can get?

I would guess not in our lifetimes, if ever. It's nowhere close to being solved at the moment. It would take multiple magnitudes of computing power more than what we have.

To kind of illustrate where it's at now: all chess positions with seven pieces (endgames) are solved by computers, and just getting to the point where we can solve eight-piece endgames is a huge undertaking that is taking years with no current timetable. And those positions are FAR, far simpler than the starting (32-piece) position in chess.

Yeah, it's hard to imagine it being solved. However, I think it's reasonable at some point that computers may get to the point where there is basically almost no ways to demonstrate if one is better than the other. E.g. TCEC has to keep changing to more dubious and then really bad openings/starting positions for computers to demonstrate ability over one another, to the point that they stop running their competitions.

In the Chess Life articles Bruce Pandofini writes how he suggested the title The Queen's Gambit to author Walter Tevis 38 years ago and how he worked as a chess consultant on the current series. There are also interviews with star Anya Taylor-Joy, the producer and director Scott Frank.
The article also relates how Garry Kasparov came on board and modified the game Petrosian Akopian (Yerevan 1988) for Beth's final encounter in the series.
