What is the best approach to starting a chess game when your opponent moves the pawn in front of the queen 2 spaces ahead?? I play my roommate in a lot of chess games and seems like he started winning more consistently when he started the game moving the pawn up 2 from the queen on the first move. Any thoughts?

Please don't take this the wrong way, but if this is the way you speak about chess, then knowing any planned opening, even 1 move deep, is likely useless to you. A much better use of your time that will help you win games would be to study basic tactics and opening principles.

Threads like these would probably help too: I'm a chess noob and Best ways for a beginner to get better.

And as always, I think Dan Heisman's Novice Nook articles are great: http://home.comcast.net/~danheisman/...Nook_Links.htm

Otherwise, copy his 1st move.

The goal for White in any opening should be to move both the King-pawn and Queen pawn two squares. That gives the most flexibility for the pieces.

Black can try to prevent it by fighting for central control himself, or he can allow White to occupy the centre and then attempt to counterattack.

Just reply 1...Nf6. And enjoy the look on his face.

Also works against 1. e4, surprisingly...

This move is way too powerful and should not be allowed.

Shhh! [ 1. d4 > 1. e4 - here, some of the best defences include the Marshall Gambit and Berlin defence against the Spanish and the Sicilian Najdorf ( where the delayed Poisoned Pawn can't get cracked, not to mention the Poisoned Pawn proper ) ]

This moves a pawn too close to the king. Look how easily he can be put in check by a bishop now. Better to move pawn in front of rook.

Common lines against 1 d4 is 1 .. d5
and 1 .. Nf3. I usualy play 1.. e5 because I hate the games that develop with 1 d4. It is called Englunds gambit and many think it is unsound but at the amateur level I don't think it maters. If you don't understand what all the numbers and letters mean just look up algebraic chess notation on wikipedia.

Good luck!

I don't have a problem with this. OP's friend may well be stronger at the types of games which arise from a QP opening.
