We are playing Thursday evening, 5/29, at 6pm central time on chess.com. My username is the same, so finding the game shouldn't be too hard. I cannot promise you will see very high quality chess, at least from my end

Accepted

Looking forward to playing some long games whenever you've got some time. No rush.

Can we have a post-mortem of your Thursday game vs Chocaholic, please? I can't understand what was happening at moves 14-16 and what the purpose of your exchange sac at move 18 was (with White being castled K-side, not Q-side when this thematic sac shines).

Will do. I've been tied up since the game, but plan on working on my thoughts/analysis this weekend.

Moves 14-16 require an explanation haha. Chocaholic mouse slipped to Ra2 when he meant to play Rd1, and since chess.com doesn't allow for take backs, we just repeated moves to get back to the position so he could correctly play Rd1.

I'll post more in detail later, but the exchange sac was overly ambitious and unnecessarily forcing. I thought I'd be able to get some play with the two bishops and central pawns, but it didn't materialize. Also, if white sacs the exchange back with Rxe4 and then Rxd6, black is in bad shape.

Nice, just saw this thread.

Edit--I was too slow to look at the game, I see Tex already mentioned everything, but at least I can remove the spoiler tags :-)

Opening was a little odd...forgetting about Ra2 stuff, I think earlier Bg5 leaves the bishop adrift.

Exchange sac seems a touch ambitious, but with the pawn, bishop pair, and central control there's reasonable compensation (20.Rxe4 with a safe edge for White sort of refutes the concept though). Following up with f5 might have been good, too, but things were going well as played (maybe some uncertainty about where to put the knight) until 28...d4 which seems like a mistake.

24.Nd4 would have been cute, too...Black probably should have avoided that.

Right, I guessed so. Mind however that a mouse slip can sometimes produce a brilliant novelty too!

Agree completely about 28...d4. I was getting pretty low on time at that point, and it was a very poor move. Things were ok until then. The problem with the whole exchange sac is I was having trouble finding play after that, more than "just defend the central pawns". Couldn't find much more to do after that since white was essentially without weaknesses.

And good find, 24. Nd4 would have been good. Houdini pointed that out, too.

I'm probably open to play this weekend. Once again I am 1722 CFC and according to wikipedia CFC is slightly inflated from USCF so maybe I'm about 1675 USCF. The weekend swiss system around here is 90+30inc so I'm used to that time control. I have had some good games against 1900ish players (all losses), but 2200+ don't usually go very well.

Is anyone interested in playing a long game tomorrow (Saturday)? My day looks fairly open for a G/60 up to a G/90. All rating levels welcome

If you don't get any other takers I'd be up for a rematch.

Of course shortly after I post this, my wife reminds me of something we've already committed to this afternoon. A rematch would definitely be fun, though. Are you free during any nights this week?

Am really interested in this.

Started playing chess again end of last year after a 10 year hiatus mainly blitz.

Was around a 2000 elo player when I played years ago. Based on my ropey 1650 blitz rating I assume I am 1700 max standard and would like to play more interesting longer games in general.

As OP I search chess.com and rarely find longer games. Would like something like 60/10.

Can play monday/wed/thursday/evenings 8pm GMT time if anyone fancies a game PM me. I am also in the 2+2 group on chess.com I should cross post there.

chess.com blitz ratings are deflated; you probably didn't drop a whole 300 elo in effective strength, even after a 10-year hiatus!

ha cool to know. Why are they deflated?

Chess.com standard ratings are also deflated. I played an IM the other day who had just an 1840 standard rating, just 80 points higher than me. The shallowness of the pool at the higher ratings and bot users keep the max ratings down to artificial ranges.

Bumping this thread to see if anyone is interested again. Seems like this board has had an influx of new posters lately (or relatively new, anyway) and some might be curious about this.

Now that I have a child, I don't get nearly as much time to play in tournaments anymore. But I'd love to squeeze in a longer game (G/60 or longer, don't really care too much about the exact time control) once in a while on a Saturday afternoon or something. Rated about 2000 USCF, anyone interested in a game?

I'm interested. 30/5 or higher time control. USCF 1778 (last tournament was 5 years ago, though).
