Learn chess at the age of 20 years old? Learn chess at the age of 20 years old?

I understand the tactics of chess(pins, skewers, deflection, forks, double attack) and I want to begin the fundamentals of chess(openings, traps, etc).
I have found a course called Roman's Lab. Is this a good beginning for me?

I've never watched anything from Roman's lab. Not sure why you are attracted to it rather than something else. But, I mean, if you will be excited about it, then why not?

I am not a fan of chess and I don't even know how to play it. Have you tried to search on Google?

I am familiar with Roman's Lab. I think you can do better although any study material you put serious time into will help you improve. The opening theory in RL is quite dated now but that would not matter at your level. There are some analysis errors in the pawn endgame module but again, if someone handed you all the DVDs for free Id say go for it.

For reference I am FIDE rated ~2100. So an experienced, successful player in the top 2000 players in the US but not a pro by any means.

If you like videos, I can recommend Internet Chess Club (subscription). They have hundreds of videos including a structured lesson course by Susan Polgar that might be good for you.

Chessbase also has lots of good material which requires their free software to view.

If you like books their are many many good ones aimed at players like you going from beginner to intermediate. PM me if you want specific suggestions.

Finally like poker, the best way to improve is to mix theoretical study with actual play. Then analyze your games. Learn from your losses and you will definitely improve.

Good luck! Chess is a rewarding pursuit even in the computer age when it seems every game is all but solved.

I think you worth starting to play chess. I myself started playing chess at the age of 7-8, and do not regret it. Some good chess players started in 40+ years.

Roman's lab is way too small for the price you'll pay. A subscription to chess.com or ICC will serve you better - you'll get 100x the amount of teaching and ongoing training content (like the tactics trainer), plus you'll have a great site to play on.

Chess is absolutely worth learning. If you start in 20s and dedicate yourself to it, you likely wont became grandmaster, but it will enrich you as a person. Your cognitive functions will be stimulated (+ new neurons for your brain).

In few years (1-2) you can crush anyone in your surroundings.
I started at 23 and in 10 years im 1800 elo in correspondance chess and 1600 elo in rapid. And i play only cassualy...

try site: chess.com it helped me a lot

pick opening against e4 and one agains d4 and stick with it some time
do tons of chess puzzels (i did 40K of them, well i love to do it) there is lot of tactics in chess and you need to develop patern recognition.

Learn few basic end game technics - king pawn, rook ending, queen ending.

if you want to read something, i highly recomend: How to Reassess Your Chess: Chess Mastery Through Chess Imbalances
Book by Jeremy Silman.

It opened my eyes about positional chess.

enjoy playing!

so I am in the same boat but older. One thing I did was download arena chess, and then play against the bot (super gm level) just to practice my openings. So I would play until I forgot, then look up the best move (365chess has a great opening explorer) then rinse and repeat. Good practice. I'm also playing a lot, I like daily chess @ chess.com. And I hired a filipina chess coach for $5 / hr. She's like 2k rating or whatever and obv. the lessons are super cheap.

lots of content on youtube.

So those links above are Nakamura (top 20 player in the world, super gm) coaching noobs. Really instructive. I also like GM Benfiengold's content, because he's funny. One thing is you really have to focus on the video to get anything out of it.

Eric ROsen has good material.

a lot of roman's lab is opening-centered

relying on roman's lab is like relying on poker strategy from some book from 2005. it isn't that bad, but it is severely outdated. im sure there's better stuff out there.

i've watched like almost all of roman's lab like 1-2 decades ago or so, so a lot of my openings are from his dvds. i would recommend his lines in 2005. I don't find his lines pleasant to play in 2020.

I started learning around age 18.

After my first month, I was about 600 rating. After that, with a lot of study and work with a coach, I was up to `900 in a year. Right now I am 23, 2100 and climbing hoping to be a FM by age 25.

I seriously would reccomend a coach

I'm 38. I learned how the pieces move and nothing more back when I was about 5. I never touched the game again until 30 and have only played on and off casually since. I have two rated USCF games under my belt lol. Over the past month or so, I've been studying and playing the game more and on a deeper level than ever. At this point, it's all I'm playing and working on.

ChessTempo is an amazing site. I think it really helps people like us - who started late - catch up quite quickly if we spend enough time there. I've been playing a lot of 3+2 blitz, 5+3 blitz, 15+10 rapid, and am digging in to start playing some longer games online. Going to pay my membership fees and play some rated FIDE games online next month (December).

Played two 5+5's against much higher rated opponents and a 30+15 against the same and went 1-1-1 so far today. Learning a *ton*. The way things are online now with the software, engines, and instant analysis available, this is a pretty sick game. Much more so than I think a lot of people out there might realize.

I need to put in more volume but I'm playing much stronger than I have in the past. I've gone blow for blow with some guys rated 1700-1800+ in blitz on both CT and Lichess and am picking up points in longer games against a similar 1600+ crowd, as well. Seems like I've developed a good launching point with my current routine.

Any other "old" players burying themselves in the game lately?

Roman Dzindzhikashvili was a pretty strong Soviet Grandmaster, but as a chess teacher he is more of a snakeoil salesman.
