Gary is playing a 2-day match vs Nigel Short, april 25-26, in STL.

Its 2 rapid games and 8 blitz, unrated

I think this is as big as sinquefiled cup, because Gary is the best!

Dont know much about Short, will it be a close match?? I hope

It's cool for U.S chess that we have one of the most generous chess patrons in the world, Rex Sinquefiled. Wouldn't surprise me if Kasparov's asking price is in the 80,000 to 120,000 range.

The first half of this match was today, btw. They drew the rapid game, then Kasparov won the blitz portion 3-1 (all 4 blitz games were decisive).

Tomorrow is the same schedule, start with a rapid game then play 4 blitz games.

Kasparov had a strong pull in every single game, though he blanked out in one game and let his time run out. He would probably be a 2700+ blitz player if he practiced more.

I'm actually kind of curious about this. There are 27 players in the world with blitz ratings of 2700+... I really wonder where Kasparov's current strength is on a world scale. Is he still one of the 10 best players in the world? Top 20? Top 30?

I'm inclined to say not top 10, but yes to top 20, which if we're specifically talking blitz skill would ultimately be an agreement with you... but I'm also not entirely sure.

There are 52 players with a 2700+ blitz rating according to 2700chess.com

Peter Svidler is the world #20 at 2760.

I sorted by blitz ratings and counted only 27? I did it wrong I assume. I may have had it filtered to only include players who are 2700+ standard... oops!

I would love to see Kasparov play some serious games. Can we start a campaign to convince one of the Grand Chess Tour events to choose him as their wild card entrant?

That would be incredible. What a beast.

In the interview he said he would be completely massacred by magnus in rapid. Then he said in blitz maybe he could resist a little, and in a blitz tournament of the top 10 he would not be last, but he could not come close to magnus/caruana/aronian.

He also said the top 10 is a different league in rapid and basically said he would have no chance.

So doesn't sound like he would like his chances in classical lol.

Top10 is just top10. Magnus when he is 80 might have some problems also.

No academic chess in this match, looking like more messy poker many of us might be used to. Gave me some ideas, like the magnus style did.
