After thinking about it for a moment i stand by my picks. A= white and B= black.

I hope thats right. Anyway, I'm probably the worst player on here who really likes chess a lot, so Mods have my permission to rename this thread *bryce is retarted , read about him blundering* seriously I think it would be funny. It also might be wise to have a bryce containment thread because I have lots of thoughts about chess and they are really stupid thoughts lol.

No I mean, it doesn't matter whether you'd play white or black in position A or B... I mean, if you could have the choice, would you rather play a game that's similar to position A, or similar to position B?

Ok man so here is the deal
Position A is a closed position, and position B is an open position (relatively speaking)

1. d4 leads to mostly closed positions
1. e4 leads to mostly open positions

So I think it is important to select openings that play in the style that you like

The fun thing is that I am quite positive that first position you gave actually came up after 1.e4 I agree with you though, normally e4 leads to open, while d4 leads to closed positions.

I'm of the firm opinion that beginners should learn how to launch a mating attack before they learn how to exploit a backward pawn.

Exactly my initial reaction YKW.

I think the entire e4/d4 thing is overplayed for beginners. They should play all sorts of stuff. I mean, look at the game that was the original post here. Would anyone claim that this game had a closed character?

I mean sure, start playing more e4 openings if you find yourself in confusion positions with locked central pawns. I just don't think that this really happens at the level of the OP, and as he improves, he'll probably be happy that he didn't play the same opening moves in every game.

Eh. Anyway, there should be some sort of e4 v. d4 for beginners containment thread so this doesn't hijack every thread. It's easier, in my view, to just agree that new players should be playing one of those two moves almost every time.

I liked your game, you played well overall.
Even in the opening I don't mind being down a pawn there because you got your pieces out, castled, and have open lines for your pieces while Black only got his bishop out.
Then later I liked the plan with Qa4, Be3, and doubling the rooks on the c file.

The only issue I have with the game is that you have 5 minutes for the entire game. Why not give yourself more time to reason things over, calculate stuff, predict your opponents plans, etc.

I would think it's easier to improve when you have more time to think.
It's akin to learning poker and right off the bat multitabling short handed turbo tables and having to make your decisions in a couple of seconds on each table. Work on your game at a 9 handed slow table, and just one table.

As far as the openings go, d4 vs e4 and such, I don't think it's that big of a deal. I say just play them both (or more of course), look up some moves and ideas in websites or books, and get a feel for all kinds of positions.

PS they say tactics is what it comes down to. Check out this link it has some good stuff http://www.jeremysilman.com/chess_in...ins_begin.html

While I haven't played in a while, even at my peak I was still pretty beginnerish. Much prefer position A.

There's an option to save games to your hard drive, using Babaschess my games are stored in My Documents\BabasChess\Games (two files, MyGames_blitz.pgn and MyGames_standard.pgn). You can view these files with any text editor and they will contain the moves from all your games.

But if you don't have the option checked, of course you won't have any games there.
