So this is embarrassing to admit, but I am getting stomped ridiculously. I'm so terrible to the point where I think there is no hope for me. What should I start with? Openings?

Does being this bad at chess mean i'm stupid?

For some reason I correlate it to playing poker.

Of course not. Learn some basic strategy (like "don't develop your queen too early", "secure your king in the opening", etc.), solve as much puzzles as possible, learn some basic endgames. Then you can start learning openings.

Step 1: Buy Chessmaster Grandmaster Edition - store.steampowered.com/app/15260/
Step 2: Complete the training videos starting with the really basic stuff. Don't skip anything
Step 3: Re-enter online chess at around 1000-1100

Worked for me. Other methods are of course available.

idk. a while ago i was getting destroyed by an 800 on the ICC, so i accused him of using an engine in the chat box. coincidentally he proceeded to blunder his queen.

Learn a setup with d4 and c4 and you it is difficult to go completely wrong out of the opening...

you will be able to practise your middle game quicker because you can do premoves with whatever setup you choose, and get a greater "feel" for plans in the middlegame.

Also, tactics are important, so go buy a tactics book or two imo

IMHO a beginner should play 1 e4. But I agree that tactics is the most important thing to learn at his level.

Yes, but maybe around 1000-1200, depending on the site

700 is like not even at that stage yet imo. Tactics all the way until like 1000, then start openings. Continue with the tactics though, obv

The books I've just read say that one of the biggest mistakes a beginner can make it learning openings first, learn how to finish the game first, it's simpler. Progress backwards from there

Just a little update:

I'm doing better. I play against sub 1000 and I've worked my way back up to 1200.

What website do you guys play on?
