hi, this will be a slightly random request but hoping for some insight. ive known how to play chess since i was 4-6 and have never focused on it too hard. i played my parents as a kid (lost here), played in school during any free time (won here), and have played sparingly since. i did draw with a 2000+ in the one time we played but at that level im extremely rusty now.

im trying to teach my gf the game, and she is starting with learning how pieces move (again)... my dad used to handicap himself with no rooks first, then no queen, then we got close to even at a full game.

what is the best way to help someone learn? soft play a full side? handicap heavily so its obvious you are better? talk through each move so its more you deciding than them understanding? i doubt the patience is there to play enough games to really get a grasp but im still curious.

open to any advice. ty

There’s a mobile app called “Chess Tiger” in the google play/iOS App Store. Pretty elaborate/expansive chess playing tool, at least for me as an amateur player. It offers move by move or full game analysis, among various other tools and adjustable settings. Highly recommend.

sounds pretty interesting but for now we're still more on "how pieces can move", and the shock of value of pieces. first game we "played" was mostly to show how things go and i lost 3 pawns. pretty disappointing but hard to stop a queen for pawn trade.

probably start off very slowly talking through moves (which is basically me playing myself...) but we'll see. i dont imagine itll last too long but im gonna try.

Why teach her? What's the point? Cribbage might be better. Or backgammon. Shoot teach her poker then you can go to gsmes together.

Regarding topic she should play on her own time with the facebook ap. While she plays you can look over her shoulder and give her tipS.

Poker stalled around hand rankings.. blackjack got the furthest but I mean.. It's counting at first. No basic strat. I forget too much of cribbage to teach and pretty close with backgammon.

I'll try some games to walk her through but I think the forward thinking doesn't develop that way (if ever, not trying to be mean) but any game at all is literally starting from step one
