These kind of sentiments are hard to understand for non-former Soviets. Pretty sad and pathetic, Kasparov being an Azeri native. I remember how in his ´Child of Change´ Garry sung the praise of Baku, how he loved the city where he grew up etc. This is both an ethnic (Azeri-Armenian) and religious (muslim-non muslim) conflict right?

The Armenian - Azeri conflict is territorial - has to do with the disputed region of Nagorno-Karabakh. They do practice different religions but that's not a part of it really.

To be honest, this situation with Gashimov sounds like it is connected with politics within the Azeri chess federation and this Kasparov-Armenia connection is just an excuse.

Probably there was some kind of dispute over who would play first board on the team, with Radjabov or Mamedyarov refusing to play on a lower board than Gashimov.

Both are rated higher than Gashimov (albeit not by much), so why should they have to play on a lower board? Both also enjoy more ´prestige´ I would say.

Don Casti: basically Gashimov was kicked off the Azeri Olympiad team because in the Spanish club competition he played for a team championing Kasparov´s name. That is a no-no apparently nowadays in Azerbeidzjan because Garry is of Armenian-jewish descent and there was a big conflict between Azerbeidzjan and Armenia in the 90´s. Kasparov being an Azerbeidzjan native does not change this, he is ehmmm, not well liked over there.

Yeah you're right about the ratings. I guess I should have checked the current rating list before I made my post.

But anyway, there's no way that this Kasparov angle is the actual reason he is being dismissed from the team. There has to be some political or personal connection.

Well conspiracy theorists state that Gashimov's rapid progress did not go well with some authorities because he was not "supposed" to pass Radjabov.. Same conspiracy theorists also state that Radjabovs dad is a very powerful/rich person in Azerbaijan and he is pulling strings.

Not-so-conspiracy-theory-like theory is that this is happening simply because Gashimov and Azmaiparashvili have some beef with each other, namely Gashimov was pissed that Azmai made him play several games in a row for Azeris when he was ill.

Supposedly, Mamedyarov has had some beef with the Azeri chess authorities as well. I can't recall where I heard that, though, though it came up in discussion while the Candidates Matches were still being set for Baku.
