The Armenian - Azeri conflict is territorial - has to do with the disputed region of Nagorno-Karabakh. They do practice different religions but that's not a part of it really.
To be honest, this situation with Gashimov sounds like it is connected with politics within the Azeri chess federation and this Kasparov-Armenia connection is just an excuse.
Probably there was some kind of dispute over who would play first board on the team, with Radjabov or Mamedyarov refusing to play on a lower board than Gashimov.
