So what's the motivation for Carlsen to make that opening choice today, to save his real opening preparation for later in the match by not tipping his hand to the Anand team too early?

If they're going to play games like these, they should just cut games from match so that it is down to a length where all games matter and you are at a disadvantage when taking a three-fold so early in one of your white games.

Kyle: Well, yeah, but it's Saturday and I want my chess :-)

a_kid: One can't really read much into match strategy from this game; it's not like Carlsen was hoping for this outcome. And if anything, shorter matches promote a safety-first attitude.

i like how i can go to bed and then wake up and viola, and entire chess game has been played and analyzed and it's just waiting for me to read about.

Carlsen should've offered a draw after 1.Nf3. There was no way he was playing for a win here with such an innocuous opening setup. This was a shame, especially with such a short match (only 12 games). I get that he is playing in India and it's his first ever WCC match, but these are the types if draws you aim for with Black.

Wonder if we will see the Dragon tomorrow!? Lol...

seeing a dragon would give me a massive hard-on, but i doubt vishy will play e4 and i doubt that carlsen would play a sicilian that isn't 2. ...e6

Vishy has him on the ropes! I think it'll be e4. It shouldn't be underestimated how much an advantage Anand has by playing these games in India. Remember that Fischer would fight tooth and nail just to have match games held at a neutral site.

He's not guilty: this first move was made by Kirsan Ilyumzhinov. FIDE is rigged.

It's nice to see MatoJelic do concise Youtube commentary of the WCC games as well... though he's an evident Carlsen fan.

Bring the dragon on today!

By the way, Kasparov offered comments on Game 1 on Twitter. Of course in the process, he as usual went slightly out of the way to remind everyone that he had 7 World Championship matches.

engine eval at http://chennai2013.fide.com/fide-wor...hip-2013-live/. Qd5 coming, a thematic idea and looks close to equal. In some positions the K-side structure could favor White (h5 will fix the black pawns on dark squares), I suppose he has a very small edge

bleh commentators, when anand deviates from engine recommendation you are all surprised

I think Vishy would have taken this start to the match.

1/2 with a equal position in 2nd game and the possibility of a minority attack and a small tempo advantage

Yeah he can't be too unhappy. Would be interesting to know what's going on in Magnus' head - if he'll just try to draw this or maybe even find some chances as Black

This is the nature of match play unfortunately. Tournaments which have some format which heavily rewards wins seem necessary.

i dont play chess but I am suprised at the low budget production. And why is there no camera that gives an overhead view of the board.

Also pretty lol at the "avoiding eye contact".

Draws aren't just the nature of match play (although short matches encourage it): between two top players, we should expect most of their games to end in draws. And of course, the goal here is to win the match...

I'm not worried yet, although I would like to see a emphatic victory by one player or another in the overall match, as unlikely as that may be.
