Coolest Chess Puzzle You've Seen This Year Coolest Chess Puzzle You've Seen This Year

First off let me just say that I am very happy that this Chess forum was created. When my friend first pulled my arm to start the chess thread in OOT, I thought that it would die down after 50 or 60 posts.

Much to my surprise it went nearly 1800 posts and 65,000 views before getting locked because this forum was opened. Bringing the game of chess to so many new people because of that thread is awesome.

Okay guys enjoy this puzzle:

This one is White to play and win.

All I can say is that the solution is very interesting and that this puzzle is probably the coolest chess puzzle you've seen so far this year.

Definitely a cool puzzle, though not the coolest I've seen this year. Some of the compositions from solving competitions that were posted on Chessbase were completely insane. Ok, here goes my solution:

Spoiler:
1. Qh6! now if black takes the queen, then simply 2. gf, winning a queen back and having material advantage. However, there are more interesting moves. If 1... g6 then 2. Ne7+ Kh8 and there are two alternatives actually, one of them is immediate 2. Qg7+ Kg7 3. Nf5+ gf 4. gf Qg1 5. Kg1, which is most likely winning for white. But 2. Nf5 is even stronger, as black does not have any more mating threats, they have to take the knight, after which 3. Qf6+ settles the matter. Black can also try 1.. f5, after which white can win in a couple different ways, but 2. Qg7!! is by far the coolest.

No, this was a variation that white evaluated and discarded, missing the tactic in this position. He deviated earlier and I think the game was drawn.

Spoiler:
Qh6

OP - this thread OP is a perfect example of why I called you self-aggrandizing in the chess thread. You don't just post a tactic. You congratulate yourself on starting the OOT thread, take credit for bringing chess to many and are cocky enough to believe that this is the coolest chess tactic other people have seen this year (wtf is with that qualifier?). I'm not posting this just to rag on you. It'd be great if you could consider how your post might come across.

I think you take yourself a little too seriously.

I can't be happy that the thread became huge and developed into its own forum? Thanks for policing my happiness.

Coolest Chess Puzzle You've Seen This Year -- is debatable and I just put it cuz it sounds like a fun title. It's probably not true but then again I'm just trying to make it sound fun.

You are posting to rag on me. It'd be great how you should consider ragging on people when they're just trying to contribute.

Neat puzzle, but I got the right move in like 30 seconds so I can't call it the coolest I've seen all year. The coolest would have to be something with beautifully simple logic to it that is still incredibly difficult to solve.

I think you missed a variation though I haven't really thought it through that deep, but after 1.Qh6! I think black's best answer is 1......Qxg2 + , at least that ends up in an even material exchange

The reason I don't like this puzzle is that its just a "how does white avoid mate in 1" and seeing as how the only conceivable way he can avoid mate happens to be the answer, I don't think its a very good problem

btw its true, cmon AllinMclovin, for someone of your level who would beat me like 35% of the time, to think this is anything more than the most simple position ever (took me under 2-3 seconds to solve I think), is insane!

Neither do I.

I say a bunch of things tongue in cheek (i.e. not serious). Don't get the wrong idea. I'm not that good at chess. Most of the time I win, it's by accident.
