The thing about chess is you can be pretty bad in the objective sense and completely destroy anybody who doesn't play tournament chess. While even a mediocre club player would crush said player. I guess it would be more apt to ask if he plays tournaments or if you knew his rating.

Today at 1PM (1pm in Texas, not sure bout other time zones :P) on ICC an annual Transatlantic match between University of Texas at Dallas and University of Belgrade. Board 9 for UTD - me. It should be on the Events tab, come watch!

wtf that's a serious team if you are playing board 9, do they offer chess scholarships or is UTD an oasis of chess talent in a desert of hillbillies?

we still got a pretty strong team even though we got weaker compared to last year. But oh well

I'm an Austin alum and I don't think there was a single semester I didn't contemplate transferring over to Dallas. Gotta be such a sick environment for improving your game. How long have you been there? Who's the current coach?

I am in my junior year, current coach is IM Milovanovic. I would say that the best thing is (at least for a player of my strength) that there are a lot of players better than me, and some of them are willing to work together with me, but we don't really have much time to do that constantly because it is clearly stated in team rules that the academics come first. We don't really have some high-level training camps as a team or something like that too, so all in all it is not as great as people from outside would think it is, but it is still a much better situation than most of the players are in.

Aye. I'm really surprised to hear there's not much in the way of training camps and the like. I guess I'm not really sure what I expected though. I wonder if it's a similar situation over at UMBC.

Sure. I'm really curious about the same thing over there as well. Great environment for improving or do academics/social end up really dampening the chess side of things?
