ok... I asked for help but didn't get anywhere

---> "bu" to see who has bughouse open

I was told to use "partner <handle>" but I keep getting "invalid handle"

--------

how do you get a bughouse game going with either a random or specific handle? I can't figure this out, thanks (using thief)

If there is one large similarity between chess and poker, it's that controlled aggression is usually the most profitable way to go. If you wanna get from 1600 to 2000, you will need to accept that and adapt. There is a reason "best defense is offense" is a commonly used saying. Don't be afraid to make aggressive moves (I am not talking pure kamikaze style, you have to have control and not rely purely on opponents mistakes) and you will see how your opponents crumble under pressure.

Mailed off my USCF club TD application today. I'm a huge rules nut, but 300+ pages was a bit tedious.

Really good stuff YNW, very much appreciate it. I've started to notice what you're talking about even in GM games. Chess is such a complicated game that players routinely go wrong in the face of pressure even at the highest levels.

Fascinating interview with Anand: http://www.whychess.org/node/3582

The site was linked on the German Chessbase homepage. Actually, there are several more interviews there (with Kramnik, Aronian, ...), all of them extremely interesting.

I was SIX years old when this game was played and I found Bd7 --> Be8 --> Bh5 maneuver at the board.. (obv f6 was better than f5 though!). What the hell happened to me since then?!

The tactics trainer app on chess.com is great.

A slightly spendier but imo better option than most apps is to download the kindle book reader and buy books such as the Chess Cafe Puzzle Book by Karsten Muller or 1001 Deadly Checkmates by John Nunn, etc.

Seems like Mr. Ivanchuk needs to re-read the Novice Nook on counting errors.

While we're talking about Reggio Emilia, I feel it's also worth mentioning that with a (traditional) score of 5.5/7 so far, Nakamura is not only torching the field, but also has gained 18.1 projected rating points and (at least temporarily) moved back into the world top-five: http://www.2700chess.com/

Of course he hasn't won yet, he's only 4 (3-1-0 scoring, per the tournament cross-table) points ahead of Morozovich, whom he plays in round 8. If Morozovich can win with black tomorrow it's close again. On the other hand, if Morozovich tries too hard for a win with black it could also lead to yet another Naka win, which would get his tourney rating jump up over 20. Should be a very interesting game, I would think. Certainly two players who aren't exactly known for blandness, and with first place in the tourney largely riding on the result, well, I'm looking forward to it!

Nakamura got torched pretty hard by the French against Morozovich.

Unrelated, in the club yesterday, three of us spent the night doing a really interesting game. We'd rotate in and out, playing only the opening. Whoever wasn't playing would declare when development was over and the middlegame had begun, then analyze the position and declare a winner (with help from the other two). If there were some interesting lessons learned, we'd do over the same opening with the new lessons. I got a lot out of it, and so did the other two players.

Oh, wow :-( I can't remember ever seeing something like that from a player of his class at the end, there.

Such an entertaining player, but definitely a high-variance one.

I think I need to start a "White against the Benko" thread. Not sure what people play, but my lack of success with various tries has convinced me that I either need to study this opening, play b6, or both.

Holy crap, I just now saw the game. I've never seen someone in any sport go off the rails like Ivanchuk is now. This has really gotten sad. His game today is the chess equivalent of a child throwing a tantrum.

54th Reggio Emilia: In the women's event, Bulgarian WGM Sopiko Guramishvili won the event with a round to spare.

Here's a nice yet brief interview with Sopiko (Born: 1991)

but ivanchuk wouldn't be ivanchuk if he didn't beat Nakamura in the last round to cost the latter the victory. What a sick tournament, has there ever been an event where two 2700+ players "castled long" (0-0-0) or worse?

I can't believe it's been a year since Nakamura won Wijk aan zee. That was the first high-level chess tournament I ever followed.
