Mandatory I don't get why Maurice Ashley is a thing post. He is a complete buffoon that is terrible at interviewing and brings nothing to the analysis board without his sweet sweet engine. He literally embarrasses the game of chess every time he opens his mouth. And I suck.

Why does the US and FIDE continue to let this guy be the face of chess?

No Maurice, his strategy is to lose the match now. *** Chess Low Content Thread *** *** Chess Low Content Thread *** *** Chess Low Content Thread *** *** Chess Low Content Thread *** *** Chess Low Content Thread ***

Going by memory and hopefully I recall correctly, but Maurice made a name for himself as a commentator on Intel sponsored Professional Chess Association events in the mid 1990s, particularly the Intel Rapid Grand Prix events in New York. He brought an exciting style of commentary to the rapid games, heavy with sports analogies, making them much more spectator friendly. This was in large contrast to the dry and reserved style of commentary of those who came before.

I don't think his question was particularly absurd. But it's not really something that Nepo could answer truthfully. He has to know he has no hope of winning the match at all, and that all he can hope for is to not blunder in any more games and maybe even win one, to make the result less embarrassing.

Also I can understand why, in today's world, GMs don't want to make themselves look foolish by suggesting something every spectator's engine can refute in seconds. Many weak players are completely disrespectful toward strong human players who have accomplished more in this game than those weak players could ever hope to do in any aspect of life.

hikaru playing guess the elo, and the result of one game is 121 - how is it possible to be that bad

I teach kids including kindergarteners. Before the USCF instituted a minimum rating of 100, there were kids with negative ratings. I know some adults in the ~600 range who play a lot and don't get any better.

Game 6 will be remembered for longest game. The rest of it just went to the garbage after the first loss

When I played tournaments in grade school it was very common to see a good number of kids floored at 100 rating. Games often had illegal positions (check 3 different ways for both players) and 0 understanding how to finish off the game.

They're not required to write down moves for youth even though it's uscf 30/5 controls so we can't even check when the game went to impossible territories.

Speed Chess semi today was god tier between Hikaru and Ding Liren - cant believe Ding was taking multiple games off Hikaru in bullet. Hope he gets another crack at the candidates

(Very) minor brag. It feels so great to cross a new threshold on one’s peak rating. I took up chess 3 years ago (I’m in my 40s) and just crossed 1300 chess.com for first time. I only play 5 minute games and do almost no study. Will be interesting to see if I ever hit 1400. I’m dubious but there’s always hope!

I think the 2700 club should have their very own World Chess League that stretches temporally like an American sport. The best participate in the Majors, the rest in a Minor league. A full season of matches, an all-star break featuring a Texas Hold'em tournament down to the final players going at it for a bit more than a million dollars, a few special events throughout the year (A Bobby Fischer memorial tournament, and others), etc.

These guys are rock-stars on the internet, it's about time they get treated like them in person. No more world championships without water. Mr. Scheinberg, the founder of Pokerstars, is also a majority share holder at Chess.com . I feel like he wants to see this happen too.

I don't know what I personally could do to help. But I feel like a conference call with Magnus and Isai is all we would need to get started.

Just started studying Chess again, I'm around fide 2250. Have played for about 21 years, but last 10 years only casually online sometimes or at a local chess club. Before then quite seriously travelling the world for junior tournaments. What held me back before was never learning proper opening theory amongst other areas, but the tools are much easier to learn from now so think it could be a fun challenge. Getting private coaching and using Chessable, Chessbase, opening explorer to try and learn openings. Starting with Najdorf sicilian as black (always been a 1...e5 player).

I used to post on this forum a long time ago and it was always a cool community. Curious if anyone else studying much Chess and which tools/approaches they are finding most useful.

I'm not sure what there is to study for CM/FM level. I assume most players are either finding a group of 2200-2400s and study together, or paying for lessons from a GM.

All I've done is done tactics puzzles and watching youtubers/twitch streamers. It got me up to class B, but haven't really gotten past that (though, I never played in tournaments since then, and streamers didn't exist when I reached that USCF peak.).

One thing I've never invested in yet is to just have someone point out things that I've done wrong, and have them explain the things that most sources don't cover.

Two wins for black today out of the 7 games is very appealing for the game
