Shankland confirmed participating in the classical portion of St. Louis starting tomorrow.

Good that most of you seem to like him as well, because I've heard negative sentiments about him mroe than once. He's among my favourite players and I always want to see him do well.

He came this close to qualifying for the next Candidates, too.

There's kind of a Hellmuth-like quality to him; he's kind of a jerk, but it's caused more by him being generally socially clueless and awkward and narcissistic than him actually being a bad guy.

I saw him play a blitz match on cam with GM Daniel Naroditsky on Twitch some months back.

He seemed good natured and appeared to be having fun (albeit while losing the match).

He once shared my blog post from chess.com on his Facebook and said something along the lines of “I don’t usually share blogs but this one is good”, which felt really nice and is is still one of the highlights of my life when it comes to chess. Sadly I cannot locate it anymore, as I am not friends with him on Facebook and the only reason I found out is because someone told me and shared a screenshot (or maybe posted here, I don’t remember).

You could +friend him and ask him if he remembers. Good chance he does, and you can congratulate him on his deep run in the World Cup!

Holy cow! I got invited to join the Champions Chess Tour broadcast between the 13th and 14th rounds of the next tournament (this next Monday), to talk about people's odds of reaching the knockout stage!

Got to play a nice little classic checkmate in a casual game today as Black.

White is castled none of those pieces or pawns have moved. Material is even, I'm fianchettoed, Qd4, Rc2, Bg7, Kh8 he's got his pawn on b7 and Q on a6 [and N somewhere queenside].

Got to play Rxf2 pawn, RxR, Qd1 check, Rf1, Bishop moves from g7 for the first time in the game for the winning d4 check [Kh1 QxR mate].

To spot the pattern instantly in a casual game was great for me.

can american betting apps be convinced into offering betting on chess? i'm doubting there will be anything for the WCC.

I'd say there's prolly at least a 33% chance American betting apps will have something for the WCC.

Maybe as high as 45%. Basically AK vs QQ.

Smart money is likely on Nepo but I can’t bring myself to bet against Maggzy Bogues.

-345/+267 is the current sharp line.

Def not wagering the fave at those prices.

I mean Magnus is probably 80% or better to win so... I haven't really done a detailed analysis, of the level I'd need to consider a wager, but...

Why on earth is he 80%+ to win?

The line above is 77.5% odds, you're sure he's really such a bigger lock? Esp given his poor record v Nepo...

Carlsen is truly great but could easily have lost his last two defenses, after all he was in a forced mate position [in 26 or whatever] v Caruana in a match where he won no regular games. Had Fabi found the thread in that one he probably would be the WC the past two years.

Nepo stylistically is such a bad match up for Magnus. Magnus excels in stability. Nepo thrives in complications.

I’d say the match is much! closer to 40-60 than it is 20-80.
