Also 22 views from The Netherlands today and while it's probably just fans of the two Dutch players who are tied for first, I really want to think that it's competitors in the event (or their teams) checking my what-if scenarios for match strategy purposes lol.

Does magnus just not care as much until world championship time - or is he slipping/other’s catching up - rust - or just lol sample size?

Several of his draws came in the exact way he tends to win, grinding a small practical edge of a theoretically equal endgame, where his opponents simply never made the mistake he so often manages to provoke, and never actually saw him "miss" a win. His loss was shocking, but it is a single game. And he's sitting on a plus one score and not entirely out of contention to win the event yet.

I'm inclined to say lol sample size, he did win Norway Chess after all.

There may be something psychological going on with turning 30. He's spent most of his time talking about the funk he's in, rather than getting out of it.

Also, the switch from no classical to a couple of sporadic classical tournaments may affect him more than one would think. He plays a *ton* online so it may be hard to adjust completely to focusing properly on his classical games.

Yes, I agree. It can hit some people unexpectedly hard - harder than 40, for example.

Wild finish

Spoiler:
still can't believe Giri chose White for armageddon

I've heard him say things that lead me to think he's sensitive about his reputation for drawing.

When your opponent messes around in a one minute game and you think you picked up a free bishop on move 11 and then the game just ends because it was actually mate

When your Evan's Gambit in a 3/2 game works so well you can drop your queen on move 16 and still have this beautiful finish.

no fabi for the magnus tour. this year or last. is it bad blood, or deliberate? it seems un-magnus-like to not inspire his opponent's best play.

no shakhriyar either. seems like it's been years since he's played. that i could guess is related to him drawing on purpose, or other angleshots possibly. it might still be easy to cheat online even with cameras. i wouldn't know.

I assume Fabi declined as he'd prefer to concentrate on classical time controls and/or chess work. I'm not sure what his plan is for working on his rapid and blitz, but it seems to me those controls are not going away and it may help his classical career if he can work on them more (which he allegedly has done...but still...it's clearly a weakness of his).

I think Mamedyarov simply hasn't been invited to things. And he also seemed to psychologically deflate after he didn't win the last Candidates.

What kind of angleshooting are you talking about?

As some of you may be aware, the major news in the chess world yesterday was Mamedyarov admitting to having pre-arranged draws in the past. The admission, as the chess.com article covering the story explains, was prompted by Carlsen's claim in the commentary studio that Mamedyarov and Karjakin have made pre-arranged draws in previous tournaments. He stated, furthermore, that "if their game [from round three] was pre-arranged as well, of which I have no proof whatsoever, I would not be very surprised."

I doubt either Karjakin or Mamedyarov are being blacklisted (much, anyway) for that. I would imagine if Carlsen is helping to determine the participants, his #1a and #1b concern is to have an exciting and strong field to challenge himself.

If he was worried about draws, then Radjabov certainly wouldn't be playing lol.

It's an Evans Gambit, how did you not sac on f7 after dxc3?

I love the Evans. Had one of my wins against a guy rated almost 400+ higher printed in the US Open bulletin one year.

1 e4 e5
nf3 nc6
Bc4 bc5
b4 Bxb4
c3 Be7
d4 exd4
cxd4 d6
o-o h6
Qb3 Na5
10 Bxf7 Kf8
Qc3 Kxf7
Qxa5 Nf6
e5 dxe5
Nxe5 Kg8
Qa4 Bd6
Qc4 Kh7
Bxh6 gxh6
18. Qf7 mates

Black didn't see that the Queen fork leads to perpetual. [nor did White!]
Black also could have bailed with 17...Bxe5

Ha! For one thing it was literally my first non-bullet game in months, and for another I hadn't done any refreshing on the Evans, I was fully just figuring it out OTB after b4. So yeah maybe I forgot several key motifs including that one...

Or I guess I could just blame the general brain fog of parenting too?

Look we're not talking about the mistakes I made in that game though. Just look at the final position and smile!

Great finish!

I thought the goal of every e4 e5 game was to sac on f7, drive white's king into the open and deliver mate? No? Hmmmm.

Played live [unrated game] for the first time in a year. Had big advantage in all 3 games, 2 blacks.

Game 1, have his Q completely trapped on my kingside, walk into mate. Okay get the rust off, pal.

2: Mate him in the middle of the board with some excellent tactics.

3: Ending with my Q and 2 Bs vs his Q+R+2 extra pawns, manage to drop a B ftmfl.

No clocks, either.
