Apparently Magnus is just second-rate without preparation.

Jen Shadade and Maurice Ashley are complete garbage and ruin everything they touch. Has Mr Ashley ever commentated without the engine??

We've had this discussion before, but yeah, both are polarizing. I'm fine with Ashley. For some reason I just like the dude. But holy ****, when Svidler is eloquently (in his non-native English, mind you) analyzing an interesting line and Shahade interrupts him to comment on the colour of Aronian's shirt (or whatever arbitrary nothingness her brain produces at any given moment), I'm praying for her to get pregnant again or something. Oh, what a joy St. Louis broadcasts were during her first one.

And her voice is giving me cancer.

Yeah I can't get enough of Peter - his (and Jan's and Magnus') chess 24 banter blitz is like crack

This is my new Favourite rage message I've recieved from an opponent.

anyone else have a favourite rage message they have recieved?

It says:

"Learn your lesson. I will ALWAYS take your pieces. I don't give a f*ck if I get mated. I will ALWAYS take your pieces.

Do it again, and I will take your pieces again. You understand me f*ckface?

Remember my name you piece of sh*t."

A bit off topic, but with Magnus using stuff Alphazero discovered to crush ìn the current world championships, I started looking into it and found the documentary 'AlphaGo' on Netflix.

It's a really good and interesting documentary (highly recommended to anyone with any interest in AI and games) and it also made me curious about Go which I've never played.

So - does anyone here play go? Do you have any recommendations for sites to play online? (I found https://online-go.com/ but not sure if that's a good one?).

Also - any recommendations for good go-tutorials (youtube or otherwise)?

The commentators are not very impressed with the level of play in the women's world championship

Wijk aan Zee is on since yesterday. Great quality of play. Great quality of commentary (Jan + Peter).

Dumb question: how is Nigel Short, vocal critic of females in chess, commentating the women's world championship?

Interesting discussion about stalemate: should it be a draw or a loss? Nigel thinks it should be a loss and is incredulous that it isn't. He likens it to a wrestling match - if you pin your opponent and he can't move whatsoever it's a tie in chess (stalemate), but if he can move only his pinkie it's a win.

Yeah, Short is a bellend, that's nothing new. And no, stalemate should not be a loss. That's the most ridiculous rule change suggestion ever. It would instantly make playing out many, many endgames futile, i.e. it would reduce the game's strategic depth. Why the hell would you want to do that?

Having not followed the stalemate win/loss debate - how does one even argue for who should get the win in a stalemate?

Why should the guy delivering a stalemate get the win over the guy getting stalemated or vice versa? Either party could be up on material (unless that's used as a decider?) and I don't see how one can argue that delivering a stalemate requires more skill than avoiding to do so.

It wasn't really much of a debate - it was Nigel saying it with no real rationale for it and Hou doing a triple take and being like "ummmm what are you talking about the game would be completely broken".

Oh, you actually study things at Oxford?

(later, hou makes a comment)- Well that's not an amazingly stupid idea. (pause)...I mean that in a good way, it is how English people talk and joke and I was hinting you are very smart.

I mean, he does (or rather: did) have his moments. As an 18 year old, playing in a tournament in France, he made the following hilarious comment.

Quote:
More to the point, Short has a history of graceless behaviour. Interviewed for the tournament bulletin of the World Junior Championships in Belfort, the eighteen-year-old Nigel delivered this view of his host country: ‘France represents everything I detest most in life. Your country’s only useful products are porn films.’
Which is pretty boss.

To be funny it has to have some essential element of truth, which it doesn't.

Short has always been a wanker.
