What's a good site to follow the championship?

Can't give recommendations for sites unfortunately - here in Norway we're lucky enough to get stellar coverage from our biggest tv-station.

It's accessible online (nrk.no) if you use a vpn that puts you in Norway, but obv the commentary and analysis and all that stuff will be in Norwegian.

Just noticed there are a bunch of Saudi's with an 1800 rating in this event and even one 1600 player. How much money are they pouring into this thing?

The event is called the King Salman World Rapid and Blitz Championship. The Saudis pay for everything

And speaking of those Iranian kids, how about Firouzja t-6 at the World Rapids! I wonder if he can put up a strong performance in the blitz too?

Apart from ironing out some kinks, this might be the best thing that happened to chess in a long while IMO: https://chess24.com/en/read/news/big...andidates-spot

What a bloodbath it is going to be!!!!

Hopefully. I'm sure they will all find a way to draw their way to victory somehow lol.

One massive problem I see is how to motivate the players who will lose their chance to compete for first. Back in the day interzonals (which this basically is) awarded like 10 places, so even the guys who started slow could get in through a good finish, which now obviously won't be the case. So I guess they have to have like a ton of monetary prizes, starting with something like 70th place or so, and then increasing every 10 places up to like top40, then every 5 places up to like top20, and then maybe increasing with each spot. Or something like that. Else after like 3 rounds half of the tournament will have only rating to play for...

Yeah. It's also pretty unclear where a few of the invites are going to come from. I guess they will still run a Grand Prix? Seems they could make a couple more part of the swiss or maybe run a few swiss tournaments. That would be so much more fun than the Grand Prix, which was pretty awful.

I was analyzing a recent game, when all of a sudden the evaluation made a huge shift.

White to move and gain an advantage.

I would have never figured it out behind the board.

Had to cheat. That's hard to spot. Hint below:

Which of Black's pieces are the loosest? Any way to pressure them?

Spoiler:
Bg6 followed by Qb5. I am amazed that it took me about 10 minutes to find what is basically a two move combination- it really is quite well hidden.

What sort of variance is there in bullet chess, I'm routinly going on 200 point swinghs in both directions. Practically every day.

Also has anybody tried out puzzle rush? I tried it but given I'm a free account with 1 go a day I've only managed a 34 so far

Whoa, 34? Damn. Nice!

Reminded me to try it again. 26 (missing 1 problem), an all-time highest score.

I started playing Puzzle Rush last week. First try was 13, now I am up to 20. I can play multiple times a day despite only having a free account.

I don't think it helps with tactics per se but I think it might improve board vision. How can the king be mated? Is there a hanging piece? Any forks/double attacks available? Any discovered attack? etc.
I am usually very slow recognizing these things but Puzzle Rush forces you to consciously look for them.

Recently discovered PR and it's fun even though I suck at it -- my best is 12. I think the first time it let me play like 5 times but since then only once a day on my free account.

I recommend checking out Hikaru on Twitch just to hear his thinking process and see how fast he solves them. I watched him do a 55 once and I'm not even sure that was his best.

Hmmm, haven't played on chess.com in over a year I think.

Just got 20 on first try at puzzle rush, and went a bit slower than necessary at the beginning expecting some trickery that wasn't there.

I guess that’s what happens when he doesn’t have a pre-arranged draw.

Pretty impressive.

I watched a few of Eric Hansen's streams around the time when it first came out and 35 was when he usually started getting frustrated and swearing at himself.
