Does anybody still play on FICS?

I have not played since 2011 and looking to start again. I used to play with Winboard, however the latest version (4.9) does not seem to connect to the server. I also tried Jin, but it does not seem to have premove and is overall rather slow.

I most play 1 0 and am a roughly 2300 player, so the interface being fast is a primary consideration. Does anyone have a link for a version of Winboard or some other software that would work in that respect?

Thanks!

Any reason you want to play on FICS in particular? Lichess is better in every respect. Not sure if you have a reason to want to play FICS or simply don't know about lichess.

I enjoy playing using Poker Interfaces rather than via a browser. For example, ICC with Blitzin or FICS when I used to play with Winboard.

Plus, I know some of the players who I used to play on FICS with back in the day (2200+ lightning player pool is pretty small there) and would enjoy playing some more 20+ game series with them. Plus, I do wanna win the Lightning Championship for ****s and giggles :-) http://freechess.wixsite.com/championships/lightning

In other words no real reason, I just feel like it lol

So, could someone who still plays there help me out with an interface?

That's why you don't play in an open tournament right after a grueling Wch match:

I will make a note note to do that!

A couple more tournaments and I shall join you in the U-2300 section :]

Starting with this one:

So far completely no time to prepare, just solving tactics every second I can, and hope that my thirst for tournament chess will somehow yield at least a non-shameful performance.

So your rating is still at an all-time high but you are expecting a -30 rating drop? Sounds like a great plan!

Actually all time high was 2420, already donked some off

Ooo, that is a pretty nice high, though.

And you need, what, 1 more IM norm to seal the deal?

Yep, one more norm needed. That's the only reason I am playing, we don't have tournaments of such caliber in Lithuania often where it is possible to score a norm. Well, except that I am under prepared and can only dream of the the norm, but hey, until the tournament is over one can hope right

After a year and a half out of tournaments, I found a small one day event this weekend to play (G/55+5sec, 4 rounds in one day). Elected to register and discovered I'm the top seed. Massive rating punt seems likely.

You guys need to play near me so I can be the recipient of some of that.

I could've swore a Karjakin vs Mamed game in the Candidates was a pre-arranged draw.

You should feel outraged.

This is a chess professional at the highest level who is doing this BS.

We should all feel better about Kramnik! The only elite Eastern Europe/Russian player who doesn't do it. Although maybe he did a long time ago. My guess is that it's an artifact from USSR that still hasn't quite died out. Maybe the next generation will be more or less completely free from it.

Beat a 1650, beat an 1850, lost to a 2000, decided I'd rather enjoy the summer sun and dropped out.

Also had a rather embarrassing moment in the game vs the 1850, where I began as white with:

1.e4 d6 2. d4 Nf6 3. Nc3 c6 4. f4 Qa5, and somehow failed to notice the threat, playing 5. Nf3 only to be shocked by 5...Nxe4. Still won, but my lord.

Wow, what a nice ballsy game! Seems you got out of theory completely by move 10 against the Grunfeld without going into something not too shaky - although I suppose White has scored very well vs. 9.d5 in practice so maybe it is quite risky, I dno.

16. f4 - wow, that is....I guess it makes sense but sure looks risky without preparing too much first - seems you play it and them prepare it lol

25. g4 - ditto this although not sure what else to plan here

31.Ng4 - Did you consider this move at all or was it not one of your candidates? It seems very strong and you obviously weren't too concerned about him taking the exchange with fxe3 since you allowed a similarish variation by 31.hxg5. I don't see anything else to worry about except fxe3 after Ng4 so I assume you didn't really consider it, is that true or am I missing something else?

33.Qd2! Did you realize this is an only move? I didn't until turning on the engine lol. That seems like a very good move although it also seems natural in some ways, but geez, surprised it's an only move.

How low on time were you guys? Perhaps that was a very deciding factor the last 6 or 8 moves or so.

Great game!!

I'm at my 15th college reunion in MN and just randomly had lunch with Boris Gelfand's 1st cousin! Apparently Gelfand visits him every few years. Definitely going to have to look into keeping up with his wife (who I went to school with).
