Ahhh, looks like MVL won the toss and picked Black. That makes more sense.

Let's go Levon!

(Although I really like MVL, too. )

Wait what, there's increment from move 60 onward? That makes it even more in black's favour, no?

Re: *** Chess Low Content Thread ***

Very fun. Sad about So. I really am pulling for him in the ratings race, now. Speaking of which....it seems IOM goes into October (10/1) so it won't count on the next list. And other than that tournament, the only other one Kramnik, Caruana, So would even play would be London, which goes into December.

Does that mean that IOM will likely decide the ratings race basically 3 months before the end of the year? Obviously they can all sign up for games in between but there aren't many major tournaments, just team stuff, and I'm not sure if any of them play in any of the applicable leagues.

I was looking forward to seeing Carlsen play himself for the championship, but I'm glad Aronian qualified. I like his hair.

Yes, provably so*, although there are several other sequences of the same length that also work.

Who is likely to get the candidate's wildcard?

So it looks like Aronian blew another chance to wrap up the WC. I woke up in the middle of the night and turned on Yasser's YT commentary and he was sure that he was going to convert it this time.

Tiebreaks tomorrow, I'm guessing that favors Aronian at least.

If he doesn't finish high enough at Palma de Mallorca to sneak in via the Grand Prix, I'd probably say MVL is the most likely as the highest rated player not already in the field, but don't mistake that for me saying he's 50% or better for the spot, lots of strong options the organizers could reasonably go with. That's without thinking about it too hard, and I haven't looked to see if the organizers have any known preferences or rivalries with any of the eligible options (I do know it's in Germany, so no eligible home-country favorite).

lichess ratings are a bit inflated I guess? started playing there a week or two ago, and hit 1800 blitz for the first time, but it looks like that's probably closer to ~1600 chess.com blitz?

Doesn't the candidates wildcard depend like 100% on money? So in that case I'm not sure France is interested in paying for him to be there. Perhaps Kramnik? Seems more likely if no Russians were already going. What countries/federations have deep pockets? I mean, Rex could probably put Hikaru in if he wanted although with 2 Americans in I'm not sure it's as worthwhile.

Re: *** Chess Low Content Thread ***

Well it depends on how much money the sponsor can make. That *might* be maximized via a direct payment behind the scenes - buying a player in like you describe - or it could be maximized by what player makes the tournament most marketable overall. Not sure it's MVL in either case though, unless you believe that higher ELO makes it more marketable ipso facto, so that's a fair point.

I really wouldn't be surprised if Hikaru was the wildcard.

Rex's money talks, bull**** walks.

The sponsor is EG Capital Advisors, a Russian company. I'd expect Kramnik, or the winner of the Russian superfinals.

Well, Rex's money talks but he didn't buy So into the last one, which indicates to me there is some limit to what he's willing to spend. Or perhaps he's only willing to buy in US players if 0 or only 1 qualifies. I agree given the sponsor it seems Kramnik or someone else is likely. But if Rex wants Naka in it, I'd assume he could get him in it.

Naka is directly on Rex's payroll man.

Re: *** Chess Low Content Thread ***

I was analysing games for the Victorian youth competition today. I had one from the under 7s where the black king castles from f8 (after having taking on d7 earlier) and I just assumed the king goes to g8 like regular castle, but of course as the kids pointed out h8 is correct because when you castle the king goes 2 squares.

This was good though because it allowed the beautiful... exchange sac maybe? where white plays d8N instead of queen, followed by Nf7#. Although the white player only saw this after the knight wasn't taken. I believe the reasoning for promoting to a knight instead of a queen was that when it gets taken they only lose 3 points instead of 9

Funny enough, there used to be a bug in stockfish where it would promote to rook instead of queen in spots when it "should" be taken anyway (and not because of some weird stalemate issues). I read some speculation that the points difference was the reason.

Doesn't seem likely, otherwise it would promote to a knight or bishop. Just guessing, but probably each piece has an integer ID associated with it and rook happened to be the highest, or lowest, or whatever would make it get chosen when Stockfish considers which piece to promote to irrelevant.

Well I think it did rook in a spot where attacking a piece on the back rank was useful. I don't really remember exactly.
