Both of those require some amount of physical aptitude (although dressage is mostly about the training). Stephen Hawking could not compete in shooting or dressage events, but he could absolutely become world chess champion.

I don't think he can move the pieces. Also the no electronics rule would be a huge problem for him.

But that's not really the point imo. Any strict definition of what a sport is, is somewhat arbitrary. I wouldn't call chess a sport, but I don't fault anyone who does.

Is darts a sport?

Of course it is - it's a competition of fine motor skills.

Meanwhile, Nepo is on fire at the Olympiad and has re-entered the top 15 on the live rating list (he had been in the FIDE top 15 only once - in January 2011 with a rating of 2733 at the age of 20).

Chess is clearly a sport

Wesley So just kicked his ass though. Both 7/8.

USA v Azeris next? It's been a tough draw, we just missed playing Georgia or Latvia. I guess the good thing is they'll have played the toughest teams at the top, although if they play England that's no walk in the park.

Maybe we get Norway? Not sure how the pairings work. But, yeah, probably the home team. If we win then last two rounds would actually be easy opponents.

Any suggestions to a good beginner's book? I know about development, pins, forks, etc. but nothing fancy beyond that. Maybe an equivalent to The Theory of Poker back in the day.

Maybe "Logical Chess Move by Move" by Chernev

Missed it live, but am watching now the coverage of the Tal Memorial blitz event.

Nice view of the board/players + commentary.
No analysis board, no engine, no switching between games.
This is how a blitz event is supposed to be covered.

Here it is: livestream.com/ChessCast/events/6381281 (sorry for circumventing the profanity filter - the link, courtesy of a Russian news site ruchess.ru, is really worth it; ruchess.ru is actually serving as the official site of the classical Tal Memorial too, but its English version is updated with a delay, and I can't even find a stream of the classical tourney at the Russian version).

there's a young kid I've played 3 times in tournaments in the last year or so. He's only 8 years old, and has been getting better at a really incredible pace. @Bobjoe, he may make it onto your prodigywatch before you know it. Last summer he was in the 1100's.

Dang, that's impressive! Any idea if he has a FIDE rating yet?

Not yet FIDE rated (according to that USCF page at least -- if the player has a FIDE ID/rating it should be linked on the general player summary tab).
