When I had the same misconception, I was wondering why Jen couldn't have found a better husband than Greg

my dream husband would be rated 2750+, but I might settle for a 2700 if he's really hot

It doesn't matter what the current rating of a male is, it matters whether he's smart and hard-working - then you'll be able to bring his rating above 2800 by means of coaching.

important to point out that i basically knew zero about jen. i knew greg = curtains, and i saw jen's name pop up in a lot of chess/poker/streaming circles and just assumed.

Curtains popped into the chess24 chat (about the US championship) about an hour ago and is throwing gems

great thing is when they [Xiong and So] go into some boring endgame at least we are saved from comp evals

its almost like the more boring the position is, the more exciting the commentary will be

big action in xiong vs so....huge trade

they should just troll the world and move king back and forth for 50 moves

i love how wesley is still thinking

oh ok he moved

just looked at some giri game its so hilarious

some game where he beat topalov

just plays the most absolutely boring opening ever for white, tiny tiny edge, and eventually topalov goes crazy

giri plays the najdorf and entire chess twitter goes nuts a few days ago, starts praising his amazing fighting spirit

by just playing an opening

like the most popular opening in chess pretty much

im looking at all topalovs games from that tournament

they are hilarious. I realize now in my prediction piece on candidates i vastly overrated topalovs chances

the guy got so ridic lucky in that tournament

topalov no self control anymore, plays like a psycho

lol xiong interview...cmon xiong not scared of naka

xiong the best

lol at that precise math
Xiong obv sitting around memorizing ratings of all players in the world

xiong vs sevian world championship match 2014

awonder plays winner in 2026

xiong's emotional control probably v helpful to his results

anyone above 2600 at age 15 has some potential for world championsjip

will need to reach 2700 within 2 years tho

but chances of that are very good

oh baby wesley in the house.

the best part is the player interviews, love them

even wesley hates the comp evals

imo xiong is definitely at a faster trajectory than So

So reached 2600 young but took a long time to get to 2700

nearly took him 5 full years

i just dont see it taking that long for Jeffery

but hes not v good at 1 minute chess

It was nice of Alex Lenderman to allow Fabi to mate him on the board

Now both Fabi and Tatev are a clear half-point ahead of the field, and both have easier pairs of games remaining than their closest competitors (Wesley is yet to face Ray with White, the former is pretty much still in the race, and Hikaru, even if he does win tonight, is to face both Jeffrey with white and Ray with black).

Wtf, Jen Yu, how difficult was it to spot 61... Re1+ 62. Kf2 Nh1+ (and be a full rook up) at the WFM level, albeit in time scramble? Bad girl

And Carissa Yup tanked and took the exchange on d1 at move 46 instead of the h3 knight...

K=40

At times I think it's more difficult to be a husband of a chess (or any other sport) pro than of an amateur with a steadier source of income.

If I were Yu's partner (platonic, obv), I wouldn't be able to soothe her. I'd have a hard time not showing the fury.

Well, she was considering only Ne4+ after Re1+ there,

missing the fact that a knight check can be usually given two ways when the knight and the king are diagonally adjacent. But then, in the next and final critical position,

she could have seen that White couldn't move the knight (except the distraction sac on e3) nor the king, could only move pawns or the rook along the d-file or with check, with the potential passed pawn on h5 being not quick enough to queen.

I guess such semi-zugzwang positions where it suffices for the stronger side to improve her weakest piece (Kf6) while holding the grip with her strong pieces are taught to master-level players to the extent of automatism. Or at least, she should have felt that getting an extra knight wasn't enough to win as her g-pawn could be neutralised easily, and should have gone for a king march that had more winning chances (even in White's best defence line Ne3 Rxe3 Rxd2), with the increment providing her with enough time to avoid blunders (such as Ke6 walking into a fork).

I just can't not root for Carissa. What an incredible person she is at twelve years old. But beating Irina? Really?

¡¡¡Carissa!!!

That Rg5 was a really nice finish, wp!

But her 21. gxf6 was terrible positionally, and she did need Irina's blunder (27... Rxd3, not foreseeing 30. Rg1 which was quite easy, especially when put on the board*) to win.

* But Carissa has just said in the interview that she had been going to resign had Irina played 29... Bxe4+ instead of the 29... Rxe4, lol, facepalm.jpg.

She's obviously the most awkward participant at the interviews

Those prodigies can play chess really well, but they're not ahead of the population in terms of other real-life skills.

Great technical play by Tatev

I don't think she's awkward, to be honest. She's just twelve is all. I find her incredibly cute and confident. I still remember early Anand interviews (when he was more than ten years older than Carissa is now, mind you) that were a million-and-one times more awkward than that.

And I mean cringe-worthy awkward. There was this chess match on German TV that happened every year, "Schach der Großmeister" (Chess of the Grandmasters), it ran from the early 80s to the early 2000s. One time Anand was there, and, to this day, I still can't make it through the entire interview without cringing myself into the ground.

Carissa will never reach those levels of awkwardness, imo.

Here.

Happens in the first two minutes. I just made it through the entire interview, and apart from the fact that Claus Spahn (the dude interviewing him) asks incredibly dumb questions, those one or two word replies are way more awkward than Carissa will ever be.

Claus Spahn is pretty controversial among German chess fans, by the way. On the one hand, he organised this once-a-year TV event for 20+ years (and "Schach der Großmeister" is pretty legendary over here), on the other hand he's just not a good host at all, but he insisted to host this show every year. The two main commentators, GMs Helmut Pfleger and Vlastimil Hort are universally liked, though.

Wow, Paikidze is going to become the US women's champ now, after Krush got herself in trouble in the 3rd game in a row (25. Rf2) while Eswaran is two clear pawns up with a huge time advantage! Caruana isn't going to lose once his chasers have drawn, so he's still a huge favourite for the overall championship.

I think she has a lot of competition for this. Quite a few of the younger girls were obviously not comfortable with jumping onto Maurice's backroom casting couch.

I really enjoyed the last few days when Maurice just starting ripping people in the interviews, and when Krush started getting more and more salty.

I haven't been watching the interviews, but what, half of the women are juniors and aren't (and do not aspire to be) professionals--seems a bit rude if the commentators are just abusing them for poor play.
