Tautvydas Vedrickas.

Edit: I'm a bit disappointed that chess24 wasn't able to recruit anyone better than the Luxembourgian WIM Fiona Steil-Antoni as the co-commentator. Even from the aesthetic viewpoint, she's but-a-face, leave alone her chess expertise relatively to GM Jan Gustafsson.

Rapport and Eljanov are unstoppable. With all the Wei Yi hubbub, let's not forget about Rapport -- he's certainly not on the WC track, but with his penchant for offbeat openings, he has a chance to be a supertourney-class fan favorite.

I've been sweating most of his games live and checking chances of a normal. I was quite worried about it a couple of days ago but of course ykw now seems unstoppable . He is a fair bit away from 2400 but all the points he's getting right now will certainly help. Woooo!

I just noticed Grischuk is board 2 for russia and Svidler board 1. So amazing how far his rating has fallen.

Edit: Also, Ivanchuk board 1, Eljanov board 2. Respect to the GOAT.

That inversion is actually somewhat common. Kramnik and Svidler have top-boarded in team events when Grischuk was rated clearly higher, and Ivanchuk likewise with Ponomariov.

I forgot you are allowed an 8-round norm in this tournament! Congratulations!

I just entered the first 'Weekender' tourney of the London Chess Classic, any other 2+2ers going to be there?

Decided to get in touch with a girl I've decided I want to pursue as potential partner. only I feel like I'm playing a game of chess while doing so. Thinking about how I want to plan for the facebook conversation, thinking about my next move and having a running commentary in my head as it proceeds that's not dissimilar to the one I have while playing a game of chess.

It's more like a game of poker because you both have secrets GL!

Went for a direct mating attack, or "all in" as it were and announced my intentions. I got classily rejected. due to the fact she has 2 jobs and other commitments so doesn't feel she has the time to commit to a relationship, alas I'm going to have to remain alone for now

At least you can remain friends.

That sounds like a bs excuse, though... how much extra effort would it take for her to just sleep in your bed instead of hers and to just cuddle even if she has too little energy for anything else?

the worst thing about this London tournament/Berlin thematic event is not that everyone is playing the Berlin, or that they are all successfully equalizing with it. It's that everyone playing the Berlin manages to draw their losing positions. Grischuk the latest to escape from a practically resignable position against Caruana. There's no justice.

I know. Doesn't seem Berlin is GOAT, just seems no one has the stamina to actually beat it. Maybe unless Topalov plays it. That guy seems awful at chess.

He's not awful at chess, he just plays enterprising openings, and therefore loses from equal endings.

I was sure his ending today against Anand could be held because the weakness of the g-pawn makes up for having the standard Najdorf/Sveshnikov bad bishop against good knight ending. It's amazing that White can just lose that pawn and still win - very fine play from Anand. The computer doesn't believe it's enough for White to win, but I think that's a very instructional game that will make it into a bunch of middlegame books.

I was just joking .

Also just saw that video. Tremendous.

Also, John Bartholomew, aka "Johnny from the block" is really putting in work so far in the Open segment of the London festival. After 6 of 9 rounds he is right in there for a GM norm (he has 1 from a couple/few years ago) with 5/6. If he just draws his last three games I think he'd almost surely get the norm.

I got to know Magnus more personally when he was 16, during the Norwegian Championship in 2007. He didn't participate himself, but he was present at the venue just to hang out with his friends. We sat up one night playing poker on my online poker account, as he still wasn't old enough to have his own account. He was already earning substantial money from chess, but he still found great joy in winning at poker even if the stakes were small.

Magnus likes poker, every poker player is or used to be on here, therefore Magnus is probably a 2+2er! The mistery of Judit Bowlgar is finally solved!

2/3 should clinch it (unless he loses this one and then beats two much weaker opponents, then might not be enough). 1.5/3 - probably not, unless, again, he gets very strong opponents in R8-9.

It seemed to me 1.5/3 should likely do it if he doesnt lose this game or the next since he'll be playing gms and performance should remain a bit above 2600, no? Going 2/3 will leave nothing to chance, though, agreed.

He now has 2633 performance. If he draws Bok, who is 2594, the performance will drop to something around 2620ish. If his last two opponents are both around 2600, two draws might just be enough. But if it's even a 2500 guy, a draw will instantly drop him below 2600.

Which is something I always found interesting. John is rated ~2450, so a draw vs a 2550 is a good result which increases his rating. But from the point of performance, it is actually a bad result which would drop his performance. I guess it's logical, just kinda strange to me somehow.
