Chess.com is a cesspool. The moderation is one of the main reasons (there are many).

That game against Salomon was really interesting. Well done!

Any idea how Carlsen will fare if he play Hearthstone?
The game is so similar to chess (board control, tempo, calculation) with a decent amount of luck.

I don't think that's totally ridiculous, the only ridiculous thing is that there is no good target audience for it. Weaker players should try to fix their weaknesses rather than convince themselves they have a certain style of play. Stronger players are unlikely to learn anything new from the chart. I guess it's perfect for chess.com's army of 1200s who never get better at chess but think they are the ****.

Recommending the Trompowsky as a main defence to e4 might also not be very helpful. But I guess that's a cut and paste error and there was some good advice that was lost.

Even that is an unfair criticism because no matter what strength you are, you have to play some opening. The advice for Black against c4 is pretty decent - if you know what you do against d4, here are some practical ways to get similar positions.

I answered the questions and pretty much get the openings I already play.

Weird since the Trompowsy on the White side has crossed swords, but on that side has a Trombone. Perhaps they meant to put the Petroff there?

They probably meant the good ole Rusty Trombone, better for an advanced repertoire.

I kinda liked it. Although I now realize my repertoire (I already knew this though) really is as weird as possible in terms of play style.

Yeah the petroff must be what they meant, good call

Coincidentally, crossed swords and the rusty trombone was the same repertoire a certain IM offered a friend of mine the chance to study in his hotel room.

YKW beats legendary Icelandic GM Fridrik Olafsson to tie the match for Lithuania and keep himself in the running for an IM norm.

He has White against one of two strong Greek GMs tomorrow. If I added up right, 1/2 from the last two rounds is enough for an IM norm assuming he avoids the weakest opponents (Scotland, Faeroes) in round 7. If Lithuania get one of those teams he'll need 1.5/2.

Should be a good sweat tomorrow and Sunday. YouKnowWho, if you're reading this, focus on playing good moves and forget about the norm thing!

Wow that is cool. What does he need to become an IM? A 2400 Fide published (or live?) rating and 3 IM norms?

I am terrible at chess but YKW seems like a beast. I really enjoy looking at his games and the way he plays.

Yes, >=2400 live and 3 norms (though it helps to have >=2400 published because less paperwork will be required then).

YKW totally outplaying a second consecutive GM opponent. An exchange up in an unlosable endgame. Unfortunately I don't know if it's really winnable (two rooks and g and h pawns against rook, bishop, f, g and g pawns). The computer really likes it though, and probably there are chances if he keeps the rooks on: Bacrot-Tomashevsky was quickly agreed drawn R+3 vs B+3 yesterday.

Awesome stuff.

Do we know how many IM norms he has already?

I think this is his first. The two rooks were enough and his opponent cracked under the pressure. It also won the match for Lithuania which should guarantee a strong enough last round opponent that he gets the norm even if he loses.

All games are live on chess24.com, I can't link because I'm on the mobile app but it's the bottom board of Greece Lithuania

Yo yo yo, thanks for the kind words guys

I have made an IM norm from 8 rounds, but since two years ago in Euro Team Champ in Warsaw I made a norm which counted as 10 games, this 8 game norm can be counted as a full one. So it doesn't matter even if I don't have a norm after 9 rounds! Woot, two down, one to go (and to gain that damn ELO...)
