I deliberately stopped playing correspondence games (except 1 that i owed and just started) a few weeks ago and my tactics rating went up like 50 points after stagnating for quite a while. My head seems more clear. I play the occassional 15/10. Ive also noticed im starting to out-endgame similar opponents where i used to always lose endgames.

Magnus has a new video playing himself:

For anyone who isn't watching them, John B playing Magnus is one of the best things online:

European Team Championship starts tomorrow. Lots of big guns - Carlsen, Aronian, Giri and 17 other 2700+ GMs - and our own YouKnowWho.

Judging from his Facebook of gibberish, ykw is pretty pumped.

Carlsen is a patzer now lol.

Rapport is making a strong recovery. +60 or so when all he could do was lose semi-recently.

Is he more focused on modeling now?

Not winning after playing such a game ****ing blows, what can I say. On the other hand, my biggest mistake came when I played a move with 2 seconds left on a clock, so I can blame no one but myself black tomorrow again, which makes it 3 blacks in 4 games. 1.5/3 is alright, but it really, really shoulda been 2/3, which would have been a nice start for a norm opportunity.

Fun fact - when we played Norway Carlsen didn't play, but he appeared about 2 hours in to the game and watched our match for a good hour. It's quite a strange feeling, to have the world champion kibitz your game (with a sour face, too, cause my Norwegian opponent seemed quite lost at that point, though Houdini begged to differ).

The engine didn't seem to think your game was that clear today. Seemed you had the chances, but tricky. Keep up the solid work and keep fighting! .

A shame, you had him totally outplayed but unfortunately knights are better than rooks from move 36-40, and he made the most of his brief material advantage

That is not the one I am talking about but you can click on my name and find it, vs. Iovcov.

it's this game? http://www.chessgames.com/perl/chessgame?gid=1808880

on the surface it seems well played, but you missed qg4 on move 23, forking all of white's kingside pawns

made up for it today! 50% performance against 2450s with 3/4 games being as Black is a great start.

Certainly got lucky today, it was a completely crazy game, so much to calculate. I do feel like I played the first part of the game very well and outplayed him, but then chickened out of winning an exchange cause I saw some ghosts and things went downhill from there

That position was so messy it was like a haunted house. At depth 8-10 stockfish just was throwing out random evals. A line would be crushing but actually be hugely losing, etc. Pretty fun to sweat although I really should stop looking at the evals and it'd be even more fun even though I'd really have no clue.

Hey guys. Used to play chess as a kid (11-13) and was 1400 rating USCF when I randomly quit after a bad tournament.

Just started playing again 2 months ago. Played about 1,000 chess.com 3 & 5 minute blitz games in that timespan. chess.com blitz rating is 1500.

Played my first tourney in 12 years over weekend and did well, beating an 1860 and 1640 and had an easy draw against an expert in endgame but blew it going for the win with 48 seconds to go on my clock. Ironically the 4th game was a loss to 1411 rated player

Looking forward to this thread and the other twoplustwo chess threads

And Carlsen loses again with a really simple blunder. I was watching it on chess.com, has anyone else noticed that the mods in chat there are absurdly overzealous, or was this an isolated incident? Relatively harmless jokes about Magnus' poor form were getting deleted, really off-putting to me.

He really is having a hard time b/c YKW is at the tournament. It probably really messed up his equilibrium when he saw YKW embark on an ill-advised piece sac k-side attack.

I think he's psyched out because Judit Bowlgar finally hit 2820 and is probably going to be strong enough to beat him in a WC match soon.
