I guess I assumed they just agreed to a draw beforehand but then decided to play screwy moves as if something really deep was going on.

But yeah, I also was searching for counter play on a bunch of moves until finally I couldn't take it any longer with the random pawn moves and piece sacs, lol.

Anand-Kasparov 1991

Here's my write-up:

Wut?

JFC at that game. Dudes be crazy. Magnus needs to get into some battles like that.

Looks like 11...Ra5 was prepared, and Kasparov hung himself with his own rope. I doubt this happens with today's computer analysis.

Has there ever been a comic where Magnus and someone are staring down at the board, waiting to start play, Magnus' head in his hands, announcing "Your position is lost."

Because that would be funny.

I find myself staring at the board in all my correspondence games, during each move, thinking "this is the critical move in the game, don't **** up." Kind of funny but probably true. Tempo is so important so really every move is critical when you are playing someone similarly rated.

Where is everyone? This board is kind of dead.

Depends on the position -- "sit around and do nothing" and "sit around and do little that changes the static nature of the position (i.e., exchanging, pawn moving)" are very often the best strategy.

Yeah, what Rei said. It really depends. Just like most general rules, .

That being said, I do know the feeling. In correspondence you can just sink an hour into one move if you want so it's kind of hard to know when to just stop and play a damn move, lol.

The user "Renato" that he plays was a cheater, apparently.

1. d4 > 1. e4

Since at the very least it avoids the Sicilian.

I played 1e4 today for the first time in a long time due to a misclick. Thought I was doing my standard 1d4 2c4 3Nc3 opening but instead opened e4...e5 d4 then was like "wait, what?" It was a blitz game that I ended up winning even though I made a couple bad mistakes later on. Opponent lost both his knights to me early and never recovered.

Gashimov-Grischuk (Alexander once said in a post-game interview that this was his best game), I like this one more than Short-Timman.

Navara's king walk is funnier though, straight up the f-file in nearly consecutive moves (and all/most preparation?).

King walks (and unusual king moves) are some of my favorite chess things.

I had something similar in one of my early games, I marched my king all the way to I think it was a1 or h1 to avoid a perpetual when I was up a ton of material. Only it turns out in that one I should have been mated by doing so

If white makes the most optimal move every move do they

a) always win
b) draw at worst every time (ie often/usually win but at worst they draw)
c) unsure
d) there is no such thing as optimal/most optimal move in chess
e) something else
