Either German chess organisations prefer to underestimate players' ages when birth dates are unknown (i.e. refer to someone born in 2004 as 6-year-old throughout 2011, though I guess they know their members' birthdays), or Keymar seems to have the birthday in November or December.

According to a 'Hall of Fame' document of the Berlin Chess Association, published in November (or on October 31) 2011,
Quote:
Stand per 31.10.2011 <...>

o 23.-29.10.2011: 11. Offene Einzelmeisterschaft 2011 (U8) - Anreise am So bis 17:30
• in Sebnitz (Sachsen) - Bedenkzeit: 1 Stunde für 36 Züge + ¼ Stunde für den Rest
• 1. Runde: Mo um 09:00
• 81 Teilnehmer (9 Runden Swiss):
• 1. Vincent Keymer/1534 (9) => erst 6 Jahre alt !!
2. Alexander Niemann/1384 (7½)
3. Till Heckmann/Empo/1178 (7)
I.e. he was 6 years old as of 29.10.2011. (I don't speak German, rely on Google Translate.)

Also, according to the news page of his chess club,

Quote:
18.10.2014

(The entry congratulated him on the 6th place in the Junior World Championship in South Africa and stated that he was yet 9 at the time, i.e. born after 18.10.2004.)

I think Nov 1, 2004, is a conservative estimate of his birth date. You can still go through documents of his chess club and try to find out the exact date (good luck, hehe).

2150 USCF (peak 2157), but under 2000 FIDE. Not to imply that's bad or anything.

And thank you cooon! Wow! So he's under 10.5 years old still, and already the highest rated U11 player ever! And all because of one good event... lol k=40, lol FIDE.

John Bartholomew takes on an ultra-strong player rumored to be Magnus Carlsen.

My reaction to some of the moves: jfc.

Game against a highly weakened engine in bullet (I got the black pieces).

I missed mate like three times at one point lol, and tempting stalemate at the end was kind of silly. Did quickly spot a bunch of constructive plans and some tactics though.

Cool video, Rei. I'm watching it and during both the first 2 matches he says "I like my position here" then gets stomped.

That definitely wasn't listed on her tournament results page when I posted, but there you go. Yes, she is now above 2200 USCF! Congratulations Carissa!

ahhhh very cool, thanks man.

Are there 400 possible variations in moves after white opens and black responds?

Trying to figure it out. I got 16 possible pawn openings for white and 4 possible knight openings. Likewise for black so 20x20?

20 possible opening moves for each side, 400 possible positions after each side has moved is right. And I think a typical middlegame position is more like 30 possible moves as the position opens up (probably a bit more). The tree of variations gets huge quickly.

Three-check chess is fun, you do have to play quite cautiously in the opening, it's very easy to lose a game quickly.

My favorite chess variant, by far and away, is Crazyhouse.

I remember watching a video quite some time ago in which Ivanchuk commented on this game (Ivanchuk-Csom, 1989), but I can't seem to find it now. Does anyone know where it was posted?

Someone on YT said that post was full of ****. No idea who it is but I hope it's Magnus. I've been looking at Bartholomew's games every night since Rei posted that. Crazy how he talks while playing bullet.

Hey guys! Figured this would be a decent place to ask a noob question. I'm a big fan of strategy games, but for some reason I've never really had an interest in chess until recently. I'm away from my computer most of the time, so I was wondering is there a good app out there to learn? Maybe not for advanced stuff, but to take you through some basic strategies and/or have you play against crappy AIs? I know how the pieces move, but know pretty much zero about any kind of strategy. Thanks!

Should be lots of choices in the crappy AIs department, though be aware that if you play exclusively against computers it could adversely affect your game when you play against humans of similar level. Though if the alternative is to just not play chess, you'll obviously get better training playing against crappy AIs. Imo its fine to play them but they do make different kinds of mistakes than what you'd encounter against beginners (weird mix of flawless tactics and the occasional wtf random move that not even a beginner would consider making, so if you play them a lot you might start to exploit that by playing very passive/safe and waiting for the hobbled AI to do something crazy).

Play Magnus is a quality app available for free on iOS and I think android, you play against simulated versions of the world champion at different ages. I don't think any beginner on earth was worse than Magnus was at 5. Good lord he sucked.

Cool yea I'm definitely not opposed to mixing in some human games, but there will be times (either limited cell service or limited time) where I'd like to get some practicing in and can't do a full blown me v human game.

Just downloaded Play Magnus, looks AMAZING! Thanks so much! I'm pumped.
