Moving into check wasn't meant to be part of the oddness; cvtv isn't as smart as Arena. Fixed Nd5.

I also annotated it.

Well, I've just set Stockfish in the most aggro mode (maximum contempt factor, mobility, pawn structure, passed pawns, space, aggressiveness, skill, zero cowardice) and watched what was happening when it played with itself.

I guess I first need to annotate the 0.5 | 3 bullet where a white knight was left hanging (attacked by a non-pinned pawn) but got taken only after 8 moves (correctly so) - by another knight which was immediately recaptured by a pawn, so the sac was declined (and there had been a bishop sac by Black which also got declined) I don't yet understand what was going on, slower engine analysis will show

I hope :/

I still don't fully understand what was going on, so let me just post the raw PGN and the replayer with automatic comments by Stockfish and let someone else analyse and annotate it.

As far as I've understood, it was best to accept both sacs, but the moves the comp played were close second best, except one occasion (Black's move 23 blunder and White's miss of it).

16... Bxh3 works because, after 17. gxh3 Qxh3, White's queen is overloaded by defending d3 and b3. Stockfish (in the normal, not aggro-tuned mode) shows a ridic sequence 18. Qb1 g6 (preventing Bf5 and Ng4, preparing f6 trapping the knight) 19. bxa4 f6 20. Qxb6 fxe5 21. fxe5 (otherwise, after exf4, Black has a winning attack) Qxd3 22. Bf4 Qf3 23. exd6 Rxe2 24. Rxe2 Qxe2 25. dxc7 Qg4+ with perpetual.

There are generally tons of pieces hanging in arising lines, e.g. White also threatens c4 for Bxa5 for long; at move 16, White could have played Nf3 to chase the queen back to d8 - if she goes to h6, then she's semi-trapped and f4-f5 wins the g-pawn.

23... Bc7?? looks like the only big blunder in the game (turning the evaluation upside down from -2 to +1.5) - 24. Rh2 (instead of 24. Bc1 that was played) makes Black's queen feel uncomfortable, eventually distracts the f-pawn from attacking the knight, after which White implements his discovered attack idea with c4.

Edit: here's the line shown by the aggro version of Stockfish at depth 18 before it switches to the correct 23... fxe5 (it did see 24. Rh2, but didn't see 27. g5! while playing):

23... Bc7 24. Rh2 Bh3 25. g4 Qh4 26. Be1 Qh6 27. c4? fxe5 28. dxe5 Bxe5 29. fxe5 etc.

Otherwise, Black slowly but surely accumulates the advantage by using nuances of piece coordination better.

Also note the brilliancy of Black's 33... Kg7!! instead of the 33... Kxg6 almost any human would play in bullet; the idea is of course to make White capture on d3 without check.

Here's another computer game, one-sided but still fascinating.

Plot spoiler alert:
Spoiler:
Black doesn't castle, goes for a pawn slalom g7-g5-f4-e3, uses it and Bh3 to curiously 'seal' the White king on g1 together with the rook on h1 and then switches to the queenside to pass a pawn, playing essentially with an extra rook despite yet equal material (eventually trapping the l-s bishop); Black's queen boldly stands under the gun of a white pawn for 6 moves in a row, which she can afford because the pawn is absolutely pinned; White has to sac a knight to get the rook out

Pretty cool. And in the 19. Kf2 line, the king can step up to f3 in a lot of variations.

Always on the lookout for Queen for Stuff trades to get more practice with those types of positions.

I knew this line was possible when I took on g2 and that it would get me two pawns, a knight, a rook and some positional edge in exchange for the queen, and it worked beautifully:

Is there a winning plan here for white? Stockfish keeps insisting it's +3ish, but none of the lines it suggests really seem to go anywhere, so I'm wondering if it's a horizon effect thingie.

So I thought I'd watch some of the chess explained channel as kingscrusher hasn't uploaded a huge amount of blitz recently and the most recent thing he has is turning over nakamura in about 15 moves

CE's very first filmed blitz was vs Nakamura too (it was not so bad on CE's side before mistake at the end in time trouble); so we can say that your decision to watch his channel started a new epoch of his blitz career ; welcome to the club!

Hmm, it depends on what time control you give to the comp and how long you allow it to think (the 'Slow Thinker' property of Stockfish).

In my case, I set up 10|15 games, with Slow Thinker being 100 in the first case and 80 in the second one, and Black ended up playing on the increment by move 25 in both cases (which is a valid practical consideration - the defending side has to spend much more time and is likely to get into time trouble and blunder). Black lost both times.

Of course, the comp fails at the endgame strategy, and so do I, but it looks like White should strive to put the rook on the 7th-8th rank (from the long side, obv) and invade by the king through the centre while using the knight as a defensive/interposing piece (from checks or Rxf5 threats). Black won't be able to defend g7 by the rook from the 7th rank (it will get interposed), while an attempt to defend it from the g-file will result in some mating (or king invasion from f8) chances for White.

Black lacks space in this position, his king is passive, and White has just one extra piece and so can put more pressure on g7 and then f6. Note in game 2 (and the upcoming game 3) that the knight also gives White an opportunity for a fork defence of the f5 pawn (i.e. if Black's king is on e8 or g8, White can sometimes leave f5 uncovered if the knight can give a fork on d6, e7 or g7 after Rxf5). I agree with the above games that White must be winning.

The result given correct play seems orthogonal to the persuasiveness of a human plan. Maybe that plan should work, maybe it shouldn't -- the variations will decide.

Moreover, it's not obvious that those ideas are the truth of the position and that White is winning by extension. How are you so confident? Black can defend a lot more sturdily than it did in those games -- it has g7-g6 ideas, among others. Just for starters, 3.-Ra1 is a clear improvement in the first game (not wrt eval, but strategically). And how did Stockfish settle on 1.-Ra4??, leading to unnecessary complications, in the second? I get other, less awful, moves at 38 ply (and at anything over 33).

It's looking more like host commentary - KC himself is barely talking (which is natural for a lower rated player in a pair of commentators).

anyone wanna recommend a chess app for iPhones?

brother and I wanna play slow games (correspondence? just without a timer), there has to be an app for that right?

no idea what my ranking would be, probably a couple points above 0, assuming you can't go into the negatives

I just want to be able to soul crush the 8th graders in the chess club. lol

can someone suggest some things to get started? assume you're talking to someone that knows the rules but has played like ~50 games lifetime.

study an opening or two enough to be comfortable after 5-6 moves? read something? if so, what?

Here's a review (as of August 2013) of correspondence chess apps for iOS. The lichess.org app is in development (to be finished soon), you can also make a game untimed there (though there are no advanced correspondence chess features; the only useful thing is notification about an opponent's move if you have left the page).

OK, so you know how the pieces move and what the goal of the game is and probably have learned a few tricks in 50 games.

Pretty much anything you do involving chess will get you better at chess if you're trying to learn something from it, but some things will get you better faster than others.

The best way to soul crush the club tweens and generally the quickest way to novice improvement is to study tactics. Tactics are situations where you can force your opponent to lose material.

You can start with learning the basic patterns, such as forks and skewers, along with basic checkmates.

Eventually you'll want to start solving tactics problems, which can either come in book form or a web site (my favorite is chess.emrald.net, because it requires very quick solutions to facilitate pattern recognition rather than raw calculation).

Speaking of the prodigy watch, Sam Sevian has just crossed 2500 in the St. Louis GM/IM invitational (and had already earned the 3 norms), which will make him the youngest GM in the American history (after FIDE approves) - 13 years, 10 months and 27 days old

Very nice

Edit: For comparison with Sevian, at the age of 13 years, 10 months, here's what some other players of note were rated (as of their last published rating at the time):

Carlsen: 2581
Wei Yi: 2530
Wesley So: 2516
<< INSERT SEVIAN HERE AT 2484 last published, plus St. Louis rating gain
Jeffrey Xiong: 2457 (falling behind a little with Sevian's surge)
Nakamura: 2452
Caruana: 2426

It's honourable for him to be the 4th best ever at his age

Alas he's drawn with Black today, so an extra-hot run hasn't happened and he's now 'just' 4.5/5.

But the 4th round game where he crossed 2500 is very memorable, he survived a wild middlegame, where IM Andrei Gorovets sacrificed the queen for a rook and bishop, and ended it by his own mating attack with a splendid final attraction/clearance rook sac that will be included in tactics trainers for sure (PGNs can be downloaded from here.) Not every GM can boast crossing 2500 by winning such a fancy game.
