kinda random question.

i cleared out his kingside with a sac and tried to exploit a pin on the knight but failed. in a position like this, should i be

a) castling kingside because it's safe, he can't pawn storm me, or
b) pawn storming myself on the kingside

i mean in hindsight a might be completely wrong as he has multiple open files, but i wasn't thinking like that at the time

what's wrong with 0-0-0 getting your rook on an open file anticipating Rhe8 and e4 sometime in the near future?

I think playing 1...f5 would give Black some comp here. Probably will force white to sac his c4 pawn to save his bishop.

yeah no need to castle anywhere yet since 1.-f5 is a part of your plan anyway. Your pawn storm will be e- and f-pawns for now, so you can decide with the castling when it's time. You'd like to get your pawns on e4 and f4 if possible

F5 can probably be met with bg5. But you are a piece down, safety should be the last thing on your mind. Castling queenside gives you the best chance to play in the centre and push pawns on the kingside (you do have a passed pawn) so I would do that

Another White's option, saving material, is Nh2, retreating the bishop on d2.

Another option, suggested by Judit Bowlgar, is the prophylactic 1.-Qg5, after which 2. Bg5 isn't attacking the queen.

Bg5 looks nice but what does white do after simply Qf8, protecting the rook and renewing all threats?

1...f5 2.Nh2 Qh4 doesnt look like such a hot idea for white

Also 1...f5 2.Bg5 Qf8 and we're going to kick this bishop around for while.

So 1...f5 2.c5 Bxc5 3.Bxc5 Qxc5 4.c4 etc.

yea, regarding the pic i posted, i castled queenside (meh, no need as you pointed out), he played Rg8, i played f4, and it all fizzled from there. thanks for the replies and ideas.

i started with rxg3+ as it seemed more direct, but yeah, i can't see a difference now. i thought i did earlier but think i was mistaken
