Chandra @QuestToGM is Indian culturally. My point is its culture not geography. I may have misspoke. he is an american and currently residing in the USA.

I use him as an example because i think his online play rather than his geographic area is critical to his success. He is Indian though and i don't suggest his cultural heritage doesn't mater. He is keeping his blitz over 3000 ICC. I see again and again the online play being critical for young people on ICC.

This is true, in the internet era, you can play a high level of opposition from anywhere in the world. Still, I think online play alone will only get you so far. Internet blitz and 6 hour tournament games a're very different beasts.

The Gashimov Memorial has started, in case anyone is craving their fix of Carlsen porn. A couple of games in the Nakaploitation subgenre should become available.

Anyone in the 1250-1500 range interested in playing a few games with a 15+min time control on chess.com and reviewing afterwards?

I was reading miscellaneous articles about Hou Yifan's 2700 potential, and this is what I came across...

I need him to translate his statistical ability to Elo, and then to IQ, before I can reply.

2/2 after beating Naka today.

I don't know openings, but is Carlsen's 6.Be2 / 7.Bd3 standard?

1 d4 d5
2 c4 c6
3 Nf3 Nf6
4 e3 Bf5
5 Nc3 a6
6 Be2 h6
7 Bd3

Not standard, but it's not that hard to understand with a little background info about the variation - 6.Bd3 used to be a way for a very small but safe edge but Black has done okay recently with 6.-Bg6. 6.Be2 plans 6.-e6 7.Nh4 snagging the bishop pair and after B prevents it with h6 he can't reply 7.-Bg6 to 7.Bd3. A good way by Magnus to get one of those "should be equal but I can try to grind this" positions he just seems to win so often.

Which openings, iyos, lead to the most aesthetically pleasing positions? What about the ugliest?

I think the Grunfeld with Rb1 and ...Qa5+, featured in today's Radjabov–Caruana match-up, can be gorgeous.

All of the imbalances: White's abandoned queenside and classical pawn center, Black's developed kingside and almost diametric inattention to the other side of the board, and connected passed pawns (!) already on move 12.

I like how subtly minimalist it is, for all the apparent dynamicity. Apart from a stray piece, each side can be neatly divided into two elementary "chunks":

After losing countless numbers of games in a row over my last 10 I am 6-1-3* (1 loss obv) although I'm still making a number of blunders each game. My rating on chesscube is 1292 and 1068 on chess.com although I've played more on the first one lately. Must be improving somewhat. I don't think I'm the worst player of all time anymore so that's progress.

16-13-3 this month I'll take it

Vixt, I'm 1137 on chess.com. Let's play a correspondence match. ChessKing9577.

I tried to think of a lame name when I registered in November. It is quite funny how angry the name "Chess King" makes people. Even though it's pretty obvious I am not a king of chess. I thought there'd be all kinds of names like this when I registered and didn't think it would be a big deal but it bothers some people. lol.

Greg Shahade has an ongoing tactical puzzle series, and this is the most recent video:

I thought I got this one wrong when Greg revealed the first solution (and I was like ), but around ~1:25 I found out that the sequence I discovered was indeed the strongest (so I was like ).

Cool story sis, I know, but spotting a tactic an IM "missed" made my very uneventful day.

Curtains is a beast. I watch his videos fairly often can't believe how many he cranks out. Watching actual good players play chess is more interesting to me than when I play myself cuz I suck, lol. I've been watching quite a lot of games and lectures on the Siquefield (sp?) youtube site as well. Again, much cooler than playing.

Interesting that so many poker players have gotten into chess, given that there is relatively 0 money in it. I, myself, went the opposite route and started off with chess first
