I think I've locked the IM norm, but not 100% sure.. I hope BJJ will do the math when pairings are up

I'll wait for pairings to be sure, but I think that unless you're somehow paired with Wales it's in the bag. If you are paired with Wales, then you'll need a draw against their U2100 fourth board, but from what I can see in the standings that looks unlikely.

When do they post round 9 pairings? All the round 8 games are over, right? Are pairings posted on site, but just not online yet? If not, then soon, right?

I haven't gotten the opinion of the others yet, but we did use spoilers, so I think it is you who are the bastard

Seriously though man, congrats on a great tournament so far. Really impressive results. Finish strong tomorrow and cap things off with a win.

Yeah, just win tomorrow and the math doesn't matter at all. Besides, IM norms aren't worth anything if you don't get your rating up to 2400, so the win still helps

Sholar, btw, how's your chess going? I remember a while back you posted that your rating went above 2100 for the first time.

Sorry, the antecedent got a bit ambiguous. I was thinking that somehow b2 could become less of a problem, the more active rook would carry me. I wasn't saying I had an active rook because I could ditch the pawn.

But you're right, it didn't really make sense. It worked out that way, but only because of opponent inaccuracies. That's why I posted the position.

Ok so after some quick math I THINK that I have the norm, even if I lose. Playing either 2435 or 2365, both of which should keep my average above 2450. SHIP ITTTTTTTTTT!

Chess-wise, I haven't kept up the same standard, for sure; I had a pretty nice run of good chess and variance this summer, and at my high-water mark was overrated.

I hope to play in one more tournament in December, and will be pretty satisfied if I keep the rating on the plus side of 2100 for year-end.

Well, as Vishy is learning, these rooks and pawns endgames are tricky. Thanks for posting that position--I found it instructive and interesting to play around with.

Yep, the Finland pairing wraps it up. You've got the norm. Massive congratulations!

YKW's opponent today is the young dude from the "prepare by drinking whiskey, play the Pirc" draw I posted in September.

YKW winning with black, with and without the clock.

Holy crap, YKW won again. Isn't his score with black something like 3.5/4 or close to it? Something ridiculous. And all with the Modern

BJJ, or someone else, what is his performance rating for the event?

2544 PR

Yes he did finish 3.5/4 with black, and I'll trust networth's math (or research) on the Rp, it sounds right. Amazing tournament, YKW!

Of course you know that now you've created these expectations, and any performance rating under 2550 next time out will just disappoint us, because we want to see continued improvement. So get on that
