Hey guys,

The Chess BBV thread is for beats and variance and brags, this one is for low content stuff which is like not important enough elsewhere.

Well reading the rook endings thread reminded me. The only thing in chess that puts me on mega-tilt is when I misplay a rook and pawn ending. If I play the opening badly, fine. If I hang a piece to a tactic, no problem. Other endgames don't do this. But if I mess up a rook endgame, I feel like smashing the board with a huge meteorite rock.

I have no idea why this is, but this is my feelings about rook endings.

I don't hate misplaying rook endings in general, but one that has got me a couple of times is going from a worse position into a rook ending where I am worse but I think it is drawn, thinking I've rescued the half point, then losing anyway.

When you mention a meteorite rock

Do you mean Kryptonite?

Some "bad beats"!

Some weeks ago, I started to play some blitz (only against "bots") at about
5 1 ( much faster, and I wouldn't be able to convert some won endgames ).
Of course, I had a terrible score, but managed some draws and a few
"entertaining" wins against some weaker "bots" ( sure, it's only blitz! ). [ I
hadn't played blitz in literally years, but I do often follow major tournaments
such as Linares, Melody Amber and the World Championships. Besides that,
I like to look at endgame studies from time to time. ]

Enjoy!

Hey I had a random idea..

How about if 2p2 had a chess viewer/replayer, similiar to the poker hand replayer they have.

I don't think it would take much work to make one..

it wouldn't take a huge amount of work (90% sure such a thing already exists and they would just need to install it and test it), but they really don't like to implement anything like this.

I think around 50% of my endgame study is rook endings. Goddamn rook endings.

This is such a crazy thing to tilt you. Rook endgames are hard. GM's frequently make serious mistakes in rook endgames - as shown in dozens of books highlighting those mistakes. Unless you're tilting over screwing up something simple, this just seems weird to me.

Yeah, I know that they're hard but I've studied them a lot. Whenever I mess up I feel like, "omg all that studying.. FOR NOTHING!" and then I get upset. I didn't know GMs frequently make mistakes though, that's good to know.

Gah, I just had a sick, sick session. Set over set, aces all-in pre lost against two callers (actually I got dealt aces right after I lost to a higher set, so I open-shoved to make it look like I was tilting), queens all-in preflop against kings (guy seemed loose enough to make the call easy), two pair over two pair, flush over two pair. Ugh!

@Discipline

Ouch, that really sucks. Sometimes I really hate playing a game with luck involved, but I guess we'd never get any fish otherwise Hope you have a better session tomorrow.

Yikes! It's the 2+2 police!

Seriously though, should we have a no content or **** thread for this forum? I'd like to share how amazing McDonalds' new Brownie Melt is without pretending it's somehow related to chess.

Hey Swingdoc, I'm mainly joking with that post.

I think a no content or BS thread for the forum would be a good idea.

I do like this thread as "chess lite" material so another thread would be cool.

So I've been reading more Silman books. Here is a super-concise summary:

SITUATION: Positionally superior
SOLUTION: Shut down enemy counterplay

SITUATION: Positionally equal
SOLUTION: Create weak squares

SITUATION: Positionally busted
SOLUTION: Sacrifice the Exchange

On GameKnot you can declare draw after 50 moves. Is it dick move to declare draw in soon to be lost position (not next move or anything but say 15 moves later)?

Here are are two games I played recently that give me hope for the future. In both of these I felt like I could see every possible line and variation with zero effort. Every once in a while I'll have games like this.

I especially like the checkmate here. It's nothing real special, but I saw it the very instant he moved his queen to g5 on move 17.

This one I saw the potential mate at move 16 when for whatever ridiculous reason he played h6. It took me a bit to figure out the move order but I could "see" how it was going to happen almost 10 moves in advance.

These tactic problems I have been doing at chesstempo.com have been really, really paying off. I've worked up to 1700 there but seem to be stuck there for the last week or so. If only could bring my fics game up to 1700 =\
