Never was sure if I'd post in this forum, but this really caught my attention as I've wondered (sadly) the same thing! lol. I think you are both douches to be honest. You for refusing to win, and him for refusing to resign.

Although there is the saving grace of both of you having the decorum of not explicitly running the clock down by not moving at all, which is way more obnoxious and rude of course, in that is deprives the opponent of ending the shenanigans at his will.

I mean I mostly only play bullet so of course I don't ever resign, I just play for stalemate (and get it more often than you'd think!)

In longer time controls it's definitely verging on douchey to play on in a completely hopeless position, and if you're also playing slowly it totally crosses the line. That said if your opponent is doing that, there's nothing you can really do about it, and my thoughts are to just win in as few moves as possible in that case. I don't quite understand why, if you're annoyed about your opponent dragging out the game, your response would be to drag the game out even more. But that's genuine lack of understanding, not criticism, and if that's what you want to do go for it I guess. Your opponent can always resign if they don't like it.

In the game my opponent (villain?) did run down about 2 min on the clock after I got my first queen. And so I thought this would be a good time to see how many queens I can get.

They never resigned but at least started playing faster. I won on the next move, worried about the possible stalemate if I queen on g8

By making all those queens you're giving him a reason to keep playing though.

Pretty much this. I usually also comment that if my opponent thinks I'm going to be upset looking at how great my position is, they're in for a surprise, but finish the game as expeditiously as possible.

I practice my B+N mate against people who don't resign. Turns the annoying thing into something useful.

One can for a start do it like that. The situation asks to move to g8Q+ and mate with the rook (a5, h1) for the fastest beauty, or move the rook to d5 and mate with a double check (though the Qg8+ might not mate, but I leave that to the philosophers) with an extra move if necessary, though it decreases the beauty points, but how often have you made a mate with a double check?

Playing like you did, gives him a chance to save the game plus makes the game last longer -- both are basically what his tilt wants.

I try to end it fast and accurately like a machine and create a little beauty if given the opportunity, but fast. It is worth to analyse to find where you went wrong as you didn't achieve this.

It is a bit similar to when playing against a much weaker opponent, in case I try to create beauty above all, as it is hard to create such games and needs luck. If I can end it practically in 20 moves, that's a good result too, and if I **** it up, I have to find out where I went "wrong" so I can achieve these aims more often as it is basically a draw or even a loss if I don't, as it isn't well enough played.

With a 1% chance to save the game, it isn't worth to continue in a non-tourney game. I have won many games by strong play at the point when the opponent should have already resigned, so I got him to resign faster.

I’d rather not see Fabi-Carlsen again.

Nepo playing 1. b3/1.b6 in a World Championship would definitely be *** Chess Low Content Thread *** worthy.

Yeah, looking forward to that one too. Fabi having to win with black against Nepo... Omnomnom.

That home-cooked line of his in the poisoned pawn was already wtf-worthy. I obviously have no clue about the poisoned pawn to begin with as it's 100% wtf all on its own, but damn. Sacking 3 pawns and a piece for a huge attack. In the candidates no less. And winning the game. Great chess!

The 3 pawns and a piece sac was a line prepared by his second, and the moves were blitzed out.

I swear Wang Hao threw that game vs Nepo. He played the ending like a fool, then resigns abruptly when there's still some play and technique required.

This whole event is tainted as Radjabov should be in it and they never should have tried to start the event last year.

Nepo could be a tough test for Carlsen - he has a lifetime plus score against him in classical games of +4 =6 -1

I heard that these games include several from when they were 11 years old - but not sure to what degree that is true.
