I don't see how almost a full month of more than a game per day can be the right way to prepare for an event as tough as Aeroflot, but yeah he's gotten to over 2650 and cracked the top 100. So he just has to maintain at this point, to get that rating published. And it helps (at the margins) that the published rating he's working off of is 2618 not his current live rating. So that probably knocks half a point off of the score he would need to "maintain".

Or who knows, maybe all this really has just been his warm up and he'll actually increase his rating further at Aeroflot. My mind would also be blown if he pulled that off, but... anything's possible? Officially he's seeded 26th but if you give him credit for his live rating he'd be 14th in the starting table instead. Maybe he'll just win the whole ****ing thing.

Rei, in case you missed the discussion above:

THAT is also not bad, especially considering that the number 15 in the top right is his age

Today someone told about a player he knew from his teenage years. That player had been hovering around 2000 Elo for 10 years and now has gained 350 in the past year. The person telling me clearly thought of this as an impressive feat. I thought this sudden increase is suspicious but I am not the least bit knowledgable about this. It just struck me as odd.
How unusual or common place is such a sudden surge?

1650 to 2000 might be achievable in a year but 2000 to 2350 is a meteoric rise.

The likelihood of someone improving from 2000 to 2350 after 10 years of being 2000 strength is incredible.

As in, I don't believe it.

I don't think Axel had plateued for that long by any means. Link to the person's rating graph?

I didn't pay attention to the player's name. It's an Indian name and I have trouble memorizing those. He showed me a pic of him on his phone. I could ask him for the name next time I see him.

Well if the guy Louis is talking about was being an active tournament player during his plateauing period, then that's truly remarkable indeed. But I somehow doubt it.

I've always thought there was some sort of learning process that takes place in the subconscious when you go away from something for awhile and then come back to it. I'm sure everyone has had an experience like you stop playing a video game because you're not making any progress, and when you fire it up again a year later you immediately break your high score. Maybe it's related to that phenomenon.

Alternatively, it could be some sort of "aha" realization that changed the person's thinking about chess.

Lol. Nice, that would be amazing. It's the Iranians and then the Indians who are coming, though.
