Brag: Trying out e4 tonight

Beat: None of the games last long enough to be worth posting, partially due to the nature that seems to lead to a wild exchange of pieces.

Variance: Noone seems to want to play e5 in response.

Brag: Hit 1450 on the chess.emrald.net tactics trainer, a new personal high

Brag: Did it while I was being paid and supposed to be working, but no one seems to care.

Beat: It's still a crappy job.

Between work, family, disconnections and silly tactical blunders (both for and against), I don't feel like I've played a good game of chess in like two weeks. Frustrating.

Happens from time to time.

(Maybe) Take a few days, or a week, or even 2 weeks away from the game.

Brag: Cracked new high rating at chess.emrald.net: 1464, breaking me in to the top 1400 Americans on the site (out of 9920).

Six months ago I had trouble staying above 1150 consistently.

Brag: beat FM

Beat: simul on ICC with many people on low time controls

Beat: he played so weak I'm suspecting he was throwing the game to make us terrible simul players feel good about ourselves.

A win is a win is a win!

Those simuls are a chance for those guys to try to sell you on coaching (not that there's anything wrong with that). That guy is really nice and I've talked to him a few times.

Okay, so some nights I start to play a game and realize my mind just isn't in it for the long haul and I just want to throw a mindless attack out there. I think of these as my "zombie mode" nights. They result in wins more often than you'd think at this level.

This was a particularly fun one in that when I went over the game with the computer, it said I was sound in a lot more spots than I expected.

The rook sac on 24 I assumed was pure chess spew, but it was apparently the decisive winner. Missed a few forced mates but had the win pretty close to in the bag from there.

Variance: The Most Boring Game Ever - Trip Report

I've visited about 1/3 of the Major League Baseball Stadiums and a fun simul combining both a ball game and chess somewhat in my area seemed to cool to pass up. As I understood from the advertisement this was supposed to be a simul hosted by Greg and Jen Shahade, and I had signed up in the email to play Curtains!!! zomg! When I got there I found out it was actually Jen and her father FM Michael Shahade.

Jen was filled up, so I got Mike, he seemed like a real nice guy and upon seeing him I remember thinking I was happy this was just a chess game and not a chess boxing match! He probably has 35 years on me or so but I still wouldn't mess with him.

I have to consider the result of this game a failure, given he did have 24 other games going on at once and the rating difference was 400 pts or so. I don't think he lost a single game (giving up a handful), but I was one of the stronger players there, it was mostly little kids and novice adults. That being said, at least I didn't lose! I really enjoy aggressiveness in chess, and this game was well disappointingly dull Any suggestions by anyone on better play for either side? And yes yes I know If i wanted an exciting game I shouldn't have opened with Petroff's. I usually play to its more aggressive lines when my opponent doesn't transition to 4 Knights. I suppose in a simul I should have expected this.
