I believe a certain American Grandmaster used the London system to beat Grandmaster Shabalov yesterday!

haha i know what you're talking about, these guys should be kick banned from any chess server.
The only upside is the extra satisfaction beating the London gives.

I don't think most members of this forum play london/grand prix. Hopefully not! And if they do, then yeah!

Maybe somebody did win with the London against Shabalov. It would probably okay against him for psychology since it's boring as all **** and he loves playing lively and interesting positions - the opposite of the london. Either way, when a GM plays it - he's not plopping out the same 20 moves basically ignoring his opponent, the position, etc while praying for a blunder which is what the vast majority of london/prix players tend to do.

Pretty sure I remember Curtains saying in a vid that the only thing that ever truly scared him as white was the reverse grand prix

The reverse grand prix is one of the most dangerous lines for white in c4 e5 systems, especially when white cannot simply get in a quick d4. But the grand prix as white against the sicilian is innocuous and not really even remotely dangerous against a decent opponent.

Loss of an opening tempo is complex. It doesn't necessarily mean an opening just inherently becomes 'that much' stronger, and black/white also typically have different goals in the opening.

I believe the saying is like "The difference between a punch and a counter-punch."

You jab your opponent while he is standing up right and waiting for your punch is one fighting situation.

Another entirely different fighting situation is when your opponent is throwing a jab at you (which opens him up partially on the opposite side of his jab -- i.e. the space left behind) and you go at him with a counter-punch. His initial jab opened him up and created a target that you can now take advantage of with your counter-punch.

This is partially why the Sicilian Defense is such a great counter-attacking system while the English is more of a maneuvering positional system.

I hear this guy is writing a book on playing black in the kings gambit. I'm pretty terrible at chess so this game made me happy, esp 12. Nxg5

looking forward to the book At a quick glance it looks like you should probably just castle short (and try to bash through the centre like you did in the game) on move 7 though what you played worked out quite awesome as well

bullet is so goofy.. brain fried today and not interested in really thinking about my opponent's moves or even my own actually so i played some bullet and run it up to 1900 literally just making semi-random moves that don't hang too much material.

What you did was against ICC's rules. I doubt you'll be allowed on the server now.

beat: - blew a totally won game in a total brainfart

double beat: - Opponent says not to feel bad - He played Qb4 hoping I'd fall for the trap

triple beat: - it was a Correspondence game - I had all the time - (well, 3 days) to find the right move and considered Qxe6 and was too dumb to find the advantage of rook protection - I dismissed it thinking he'd play Rd7 and of course, realized afterward it was a mate in 2 if he did it

quadruple beat: - realized all this after making my move and had to stew about it for 24 hrs before he mated me - (coulda resigned but he mighta been dumb enough to play Qb2 - not as dumb as me though)

then I was so steamed I missed a couple good moves in a kingside attack and wussed out and took a 3fold repetition in my other game rather then play on down a knight - FML

I have a brag though that makes up for all of it - gonna be getting lots of free chess stuff that will kick ass - more details to come when it arrives

all that realization (the mate, how to combat it, and the can of whoop-ass I could have delivered had I played Qxe6) occured about 15 minutes after I made the move and was looking back over for conditional moves - then I was like, oh crap - then came the stewing, the griping, and the run out to the poker club and my mountain dew binge - I'm past anger into acceptance -

besides, I have a pretty good shot at winning the other 4 games in my tourney unless I miss another mate in one - phhhptt

Great way to get your friend and your own computer banned from ICC. Not to mention somewhat unethical. Nice!
