Has there been talk about a tournament where we play each other and talk about the games afterward? Sounds like a good time.

Just played an actual good game (rather than blowing it early on like I usually do) against a 1660 player after a day of really ****ty chess where I started out with a 1337 rating, and I was just wondering where I went wrong in this game, aside from the blunder on my last move ofc. I was fortunate to be up a knight after 16. ...Nxg5, but my position eventually forced me to sac it for a couple pawns in 33. ...Nxd4 because I felt there was literally nothing else I could do against all the pressure white had on me, mostly due to having two extra pawns.

- Can I avoid 25. Bxd5 after 21. h3?
- Is 25. ...Rd6 better than 25. ...Kb7?
- Should I just sac the rook after 64. Rf1 and hope to promote my c pawn to induce a draw?

It would help if you explained your thought process on the moves with question marks and also mentioned what your overall plan was. Because right now it just looks like a series of random moves with no plan from like move 19 onwards

Okay, don't love the opening play, but it's probably okay up until you start the bajillion pawn moves. Stop touching your pawns, especially way on the wings until you've finished developing and castled.

1. d4 Nf6 2. Nf3 d5 3. Nc3 Bf5 4. Nh4 e6 5. Nxf5 exf5 6. f3 Nc6 7. g3 Bb4 8.
Qd3 Qe7 9. a3 Bxc3+ 10. Qxc3 h6 11. Bf4 g5 12. Bd2 g4 13. O-O-O h5 14. Bg5 Ne4

Okay, so this probably isn't objectively a good move because of a long forced line starting with Qxc6+ but it's not terrible.

15. Qe3??

Oops

Qxg5 16. Qxg5 Nxg5 17. Rd3 O-O-O 18. Bg2 Rhe8 19. Rd2

Okay, so we get this position. Now, there are three standard plans when you're way ahead in material. First, squash any counter play your opponent has. Then, either (1) trade off as much material as possible or (2) use your extra material to generate an attack. Here that pawn on e2 is pretty weak and blockading it with Re3 both prevents white from expanding and opening lines and keeps it backward so it's easy to attack. I'd vote for Re3, Rde8, etc. Keep your knight on g5 to prevent white from opening the h-file without trading his bishop.

Ne6 20. c3 b5 21. h3 a5 22. fxg4 fxg4 23. hxg4 hxg4 24. Rh5 f6

See, this is the problem. You've managed to do the opposite of the first (and most important) plan. You've let white open the h-file and drum up counter play. Here 24 ... Ne7 was still fine for you.

25. Bxd5 Kb7??

Allows a tactical shot

26. Bxe6 Rxe6 27. Rxb5+??

Oops, d5 would have equalized. Ditto for 2 of the next 3 moves.

Ka6 28. Rh5 Kb6 29. Rh2?? Rdd6 30. Rf2?? Rd5 31. a4 Kb7 32. Rf4 f5 33. Kc2??

c4 and then d5 is still available for white. Be careful of those pawn forks. They're easy to overlook.

Kb6 34. Kd3 Nxd4 35. Rxd4 Rxd4+ 36. Kxd4 Re4+ 37. Kd3 c5?

Wat. Rxa4 would have given you an even endgame. Now just much worse/lost. It just takes white a while to prove it.

38. b3 Kc6 39. Kc2?

Woops. 39 ... Re3 wins a pawn

f4? 40. gxf4 Rxf4 41. Rd3 Rf2 42. Kd2 Rg2 43. Rd8 Kc7 44. Rd5 Kb6 45. Rg5 Rg1 46. Kc2 g3 47. Rg6+ Kc7 48. Kd2 Kd7 49. Ke3 Rb1 50. Rxg3 Rxb3 51. Kd3 Ra3 52. Rg4 Kd6 53. Rc4 Kd5 54. e4+ Kd6 55. Ke3 Kc6 56. Kf4 Kd6 57. Kf5 Rb3 58. Kf6 Ra3 59. e5+ Kd5 60. Rf4 Rxc3 61. e6 Re3 62. e7 Re6+ 63. Kf7 Ke5 64. Rf1 Rf6+ 65. Rxf6 {troycm resigns} 1-0

troy,

again - why not start a thread for stuff like this? The forum certainly isn't overloaded on traffic and this is again a whole lot more than some random beat brag or variance.

As far as the game itself, I think the biggest piece of advice I could give you is twofold:

1. Start playing with a goal in mind. Alot of your moves you go out of your way to make a threat, your opponent responds to it in a way that improves his position and then you've done nothing but waste time while letting your opponent improve his position. Examples of this being: 11. .. g4, 14. .. Ne4 (your opponent blundered but this should not have been a good move), 19. .. Ne6 ESPECIALLY - this move is just completely wasted - your knight was awesome on g5 and you had the awesome plan of Re3/etc as mentioned, and the this happens all over the place in the endgame like 41. .. Rf2 and the final game ending blunder 62. .. Re6.

2. Try to anticipate your opponent's ideas and moves. This kind of loops into above. When you make a move ask yourself how your opponent will deal with it. Don't just make a move and hope your opponent responds poorly. Try to figure out what your opponent is doing and how he is going to respond to your ideas.

And as an aside, black was fine (as in drawing) in that rook endgame all the way until 62. .. Re6.

Games like this crack me up. Opponent pumps out 21 moves of reasonably sharp theory. And on his first move out of theory, he blunders.

Nice game! What's funny (and common) is he'll go memorize one more move of theory and figure that will fix his problems

bwahah someone played 17.-Nf5 against me in that line not too long ago. Needless to say I blundered after I ran out of theory :<
