That bees gif is just awesome. Evil overlord Oprah to rule them all.

On to Carlsen - should it count if he ends up below the rating at the end of the tournament? Ah who cares. Enormous accomplishment even if it was inevitable for him. Carlsen Carlsen!

Re: Bow down to the KING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I actually took a nap when the Aronian game was dead-drawn and they had just passed the 40-move increase of time, so I assumed that was that...then I woke up and the window was still up on my computer with the result, my eyes almost leapt out of my head. I have to say that that was the best possible way I could've found out about it.

Everyone on chessgames is saying that he's not above Kasparov's peak live rating (yet), but as long as he's above 2851.6 or so at the end of the tournament, I think it's safe to say he will enter 2013 as the highest rated player ever on the FIDE list.

Carlsen said he would speak about this if or when he passed Kasparov, but I still don't expect anything other than a few bored mumbles about it being "a great accomplishment."

On the other hand, the chess media is no doubt going to descend on Kasparov as well, and that's where the real Freudian subtextual passive-aggressive gold will be. I anticipate it excitedly.

They asked Magnus about it here. Don't expect too much from his answer though.

Re: Bow down to the KING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Haven't watched or read anything but i guess Magnus is smart enough to know that 2855 doesn't mean nothing. No one knows if 2855 ELO in 2012 is equal to 2845 or 2865 or whatever in 2000. And Magnus breaking the record does not say anything about wether he is stronger than Kasparov at his prime. It's basically just not comparable.

That said, Carlsen is clearly much stronger than his peers and his style of play is markedly different from the rest of the elite. Both of those he has in common with Kasparov, and in this computer age imo it's an even greater feat. Especially how he wins seemingly without effort against people who seem to put in much more preparation work.

Re: Bow down to the KING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

btw, you should cut down a little on your exclams and bold-face. Especially if what you're saying is dead wrong. A sharp endgame with an extra pawn, minor-piece imbalance and active pieces is not DEAD-DRAWN just because your houdini says "0.00".

Re: Bow down to the KING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey guys, the starting position in chess is "dead drawn" too, lol

I have been having this argument with chess players, most of whom believe any even position after 30+ moves is "dead draw", it infuriates me.

Re: Bow down to the KING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is probably going to be considered blasphemy, but I don't care about Carlsen. Never have, and probably won't (at least in the foreseeable future). Sure, I am impressed by his ability to just take innocuous positions and outplay strong opponents. I think he is by far the best chess "player" around. On a rational level I know I should be excited about him.

But I am not. When I watch Ivanchuk play or Kasparov in the old days, I am. But something is missing about Carlsen.

Your bald assertion carries absolutely no credibility over the bald assertion of anything else. Including 3100-rated engines.

Re: Bow down to the KING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i gave reasons why the position is not dead drawn. The fact that Aronian lost it should count as another hint. You gave nothing.

I played around a lot with Houdini and it has the tendency to assign 0.00 to a lot of unclear positions because it thinks a repetition somewhere along it's main line is best play, when this is either not true or there exist possibilitites to keep the game going on without being worse off.

The fact that it says 0.00 (which i infer from your posts) simply tells us that it thinks the position is equal. I wonder in which words a 3100-rated software told you that the position was DEAD DRAWN.

He's extremely quiet and not self-impressed and always has been. He also doesn't have a great challenge or struggle yet, in the way that Fischer battled the Russians and Kasparov battled the computers.

Without a great battle and without change as a person, there's no drama or much else for us to follow. I personally prefer Magnus to Kasparov though so I'm interested in him chasing Kasparov's ratings and records.

You already said you haven't bothered to read or watch anything, you also offered a spotty and empty post that was fairly negative and rude.

Not worth my time.

Well, he shouldn't drop out of World Championship cycles if he wants to have great struggles.

Aronian is a very likable guy, at least based on what I've seen. But it always seems like he ends up being the one standing in the way of the record.

I agree, I also think that he passed up the chance to be the youngest world champion as well, though I haven't checked the dates lately. But supposedly he is going to go full throttle for the next one.

Re: Bow down to the KING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I didn't mean to be rude. I just wanted to offer my opinion as to why i think Magnus doesn't care as much about the record as the public.

It's just a pet peeve of mine (and i guess a lot of other players too) that weaker chess-players look at their engine evaluations and say "OMG WTF how could Aronian lose that what a patzer he must have been paid" when the position on the board is actually pretty tricky to play with limited time and no computer on hand.

My OP also includes an image of Oprah releasing a swarm of celebrational bees, a pro wrestling theme song, and a woman orgasming...and you take that as a sober evaluation of what happened with no hyperbole or excitement involved?

Try including some self-awareness and value to what you say instead. Saying there was a doubled pawn isn't it.

It was clear. Aronian is the world #2 for a reason, which is also what made the victory so sweet.

i offered you a draw but you decline. Having contributed 100x more in terms of chess content to this forum than you have, i take offense to this. I gave 3 reasons why i think the position is not a dead draw. You didn't seem to understand any of this.

I apologized for being rude, i didn't mean to. English is not my first language so maybe my posts convey something i don't intend. But surely they were not "empty". They had more value than an oprah gif and 25 exclam marks. Look at the chess forum starting page and you see how far out of line your OP looks. That's what i wanted to point out, nothing more and nothing less.

I entered this argument into Houdini and it came out to 0.00. I'll be shocked if either of you win!
