Board Game Decathlon Board Game Decathlon

So after playing a few board games yesterday with some friends who are also degens, I came up with the idea to have a board game decathlon this summer. It would consist of ten games (LDO) and each game will be played 5 times to help account for variance.

This will be a point system and your points received will be determined by what place you finish in the game. For team games, teams will be selected at random and point appropriated accordingly. The person with the most points at the end gets a prize from the losers which we haven't figured out yet.

We're aiming to play board games from different genres which aren't super lucky, long, or complicated.

So far this what we have in mind to play:

Scrabble
Monopoly
Trivial Pursuit
Pictionary
Risk

Possible other games:
Chess
Checkers
Life
Sorry!
Taboo
Boggle

What are some suggestions or criticisms you guys have? We're only quasi-serious about this so we're not looking for anything too crazy. Monopoly and Risk are our limits for game length and complexity. Just some fun for people in their low 20's.

adding in Settlers or 3d tic-tac-toe would be my suggestions

risk is superlong if you play it with 6 people in my experience.

You need to find some better games. I'd carve my eyes out with a spoon before I'd spend all day playing those.

Go to your friendly local game store and buy some Euro games. Settlers of Catan is the prototypical starting point. I'd say Hey! That's My Fish, Ticket to Ride and Puerto Rico (to a lesser extent) are excellent lighter candidates.

Backgammon. And check out the forum here. Bill Robertie is a two-time World Backgammon Champion and posts, so you should have an edge over your friends.

I'd say that

chess
draughts (checkers)
backgammon

Should be mandatory

You'd need a good reason to not play Go as well.

I'd put Settlers over Monopoly or Risk any day, and would *hate* to have to play all three. (play 3-man games if your structure will allow it, as they are more fun and faster than 4-man games)

Team games like pictionary, trivial pursuit, cranium are all good games, but I think you would have to employ some weird scoring system to find an overall winner in these games.

Don't forget connect 4 or other solved games that should be a lock for skilled opponent who studies, but could differentiate the good from the best quite well.
