Blitz tactics #3: The endgame, now what? Blitz tactics #3: The endgame, now what?

Here is another extremely common theme. This came from a sicilian where my opponent, an FM, played very unambitiously and seemed happy to try to just draw. He just played g3 overdefending his f4 pawn. Black needs to figure out a way to make things start happening and as always, a simple tactic does the trick.

This is another problem where the solution does not involve mating the king, or immediate material gain. More positional tactics! Try to also find white's best defense to black's idea.

Spoiler:
1..b3! The best thing I see for white is 2.Re3, and then 3.Rc1 after 2...bxc2. However, after 3..Rd4 4.Rxc2 Rhd8 5.Rc3 black has a quite comfortable position (I don't think it is so easy to win it, cause white's knight is superior to black's bishop)

Perfect!

Nice tactic, Dire. That move really saves your position. It looks like if you opponent had played
Spoiler:
b3 instead of g3
you're pretty screwed.

Here is my opinion man

Spoiler:

Looking at the position we can see that
- Black's bishop sort of sucks
- White's knight kicks ass on c4
- White's rooks are better placed than black's
- No one has sucky pawn structures at the moment

I would play ...b3.
Then if cb, Rxd3. Now white has queenside pawns that totally suck.
If Rf3, bc. Now white's isolated d pawn is easy to attack.
Similarly Ne3 doesn't do anything for white.

I think afterwards, the game is equal, because white's knight still is much better than the bishop, but his pawns are weaker.

Edit: imrite!

I managed to see the key move really quickly (in around a minute), and I spent a few minutes working out the variations to make sure I didn't miss anything. These tactics are ez game when you recognize what's important in the position imo

re: swingdoc

That would have been better than g3, but I think after that move, I still get quick play on the kingside with h5/etc.

In my opinion his knight's strength and white's whole position is kind of illusory. The knight's not really doing anything, and how can white get anything going? All he can really do is try to pile on e6 but that's not going to accomplish anything. Whereas black has quite alot of ways to start ripping open lines for his rooks, and simultaneously turning that bishop into a monster.

Very much so. Tactics are always a result of some sort of imbalance in the position. Stay mindful of those imbalances and they come really easily.

Hmm. That's one thing, looking at the position again it is going to be quite hard for white to mobilize his pawn majority. I can't immediately find any plan to do that.
