At the World Open there were a few incidents. Basically one guy would play, and every few moves he would go to the bathroom to relay the position to his partner. His partner was sitting with a computer somewhere, supposedly in a car close to the building, and would relay the computer's suggestion back to the play thru a radio transmitter.
What I meant was that in the future, when technology advances and bluetooth boards are more widespread, then the cheater won't have to do anything to relay the moves to his partner because the board would do so automatically. All he would need to do is listen in his radio ear piece for the suggestions.
Yes, but Bluetooth emissions don't have that kind of range. Plus, an earpiece wouldn't help unless the partner is a computer.
He'd have to have a device that essentially reverse-engineered the board to decode its emissions. And use it from close range.

why couldn't the player have a PDA/Blackberry/iPhone/etc in his pocket, or in a bag near the table, or stuck to the underside of the table? Assuming the PDA can run the DGT software (not a huge stretch) it would be fairly trivial to relay the moves on to a partner outside over the cellular network.
I think this could be done now with a very small amount of effort by a moderately experienced techy guy.
I though exactly the same thing when I saw the picture. If I played with it, I don't think I'd ever stop touching the pieces. The touch-move rule would kill my game.

I feel like this is a decent reason to bump this thread. My grandfather had a marble chessboard, and when he died my grandmother wanted me to have the board. But it's very heavy, so too expensive to mail or take on a plane, and she lives over 24 hours away by driving. Eventually, she mailed it to me. Each square on the board is 2 inches on a side.
It didn't have pieces, though. I just bought a set of Isle of Lewis pieces for it. Here are some pics (first, a useless overhead view):
my parents bought me the isle of lewis chess set (mainly bc our last name is lewis) somewhere around my high school graduation. completely impractical to play, but i love that thing so much. i still need to get a fancy board to show it off properly.
