Not that I think Magnus will lose this, but they should implement a rematch for a champ who loses rather than have them just join the rest of the candidates tournament bunch.

Giving the ex-champ a shot at regaining his title makes sense both from a ratings pov and from a fairness pov.

Does anyone know how they decided who was which color in each round.

It seems like white first and last is a slight advantage and generally such advantages go to the champ.

There's a random draw for who gets white in the first round. Then they alternate until game 6 is done, when they reverse it, which is why whoever gets black in the opening game gets two games as white in the middle.

Do you mean in two years or earlier? If you meant in two years then everybody else will have to wait at least 4 years to have a shot at the crown.
An automatic rematch also gives the reigning champ two chances to "defend" his title. The challenger will have to win both.

I was thinking a rematch in the year between so it doesn't disrupt anything else.

But obv there's an issue if the former champ then wins his/her title back - then the now losing champ should get a rematch too... so yea, I'm not saying I've got it all figured out

Didn't they used to have that rule in the 60s and got rid of it because bottinivik was playing for the WC for 10 years or something crazy.

I am absolutely expecting a draw tomorrow despite how excited I'm sure we all are, tension will be as high as it's ever been in a WCC. Any potential blunder is a life changer for both of them, something you wouldn't be able to ever take back even if the loser regains and/or eventually becomes world champ.

Glory/prestige/history is all on the line this week, either Magnus fends off his biggest challenge to date or Fabiano begins a new era taking out arguably the greatest player of all time.

I'm sure Caruana would love an opportunity to play a match against Kasparov, but he's retired, sadly.

My sympathies were around 51/49 in favour of Caruana, but I swear to ****, if he repeats now after 14 moves he should **** right off and never set foot in a chess playing hall again.

man, was just going to comment on Fabi's decent edge out of the opening, but he just wrecked it all with 21. Rh2. Still rooting for this donk, gogooggoo

Lucky for him Magnus just let him off the hook on move 25, much better line would've been b5 instead of a5 and force the knight bishop exchange on c5.

Magnus just missed a couple chances there to really push an advantage, guess he is content to head to tiebreaks like I thought a few games back. Draw offer one move past the minimum lol now the real fun begins...

Opposite result, he offered and Caruana snap accepted as you'd expect given the mess he made of his position.

Wow. both players with massive nerves. Hopefully Chirilla can voodoo Fabi into coming in for the tiebreaks calm and collected.

Isn't it very strange that apparently there is no youtube stream, where the commentators have access to the live stream?

Magnus should win this now although I wonder if not fighting the end game here will come back to haunt him. I referenced move 25 as an error because after a few obvious exchanges black actually gets to trade a pawn for a bishop advantage and Fabiano king side becomes very weak. Oh well, these guys play at a level us peons can't really fathom and Carlsen did say his position probably looked better than it actually was so I'd trust his assessment.

No - the live stream is the only thing Agon can control so it's behind their $20 official commentary. Other broadcasts could certainly watch it while commentating if they want but it's the one thing they can't legally rebroadcast.
