Yermolinsky is always worth a watch. As is Daniel King. Like him or hate him, I happen to like Kingscrusher. And you can't possibly go wrong with Jerry or John B.

So take your pick, I guess.

Ya'll sleeping on Grischuk. His commentary is elite. If they could do Leko, Svidler, and Grischuk I think my head would explode. This might actually happen when Giri joins them later - I've never heard him do commentary but the result with Grischuk also commentating could be epic.

That's how I feel about chess

I love that I know just enough about chess to realize that when I watch breakdowns of these games,

that there exists a deeper, more fundamental understanding of how the game works that I may only hope to achieve by chipping away at it in pieces as I learn more about the game, and myself.

All the other 1400-somethings on my free chess app need to WATCH OUT!

That said, I think Magnus has GOT this.

I know enough about chess to know that I know nothing about it. it pisses me off a little, even. but I need another all-consuming pastime like I need a damn hole in my head.

An amateur can enjoy chess in small doses when he/she desires while a master can dive into chess’s complexities frequently.

If Fabi cant convert these opening advantages past the early middle game than he is dead in water.

These are now 2 games where tactically he cannot match carlsen past his home prep.

Fabi is arguably the best defensive player in the world but I cant see how he converts a game without taking sharper lines.

Game 2 he clearly played for a draw and g3 quickly lost his opening edge and held.

The issue is that he cant go all petrosian because he would get slaughtered in blitz/rapid as carlsen has like 200 elo on him off the top of my head.

This isnt to say Fabi isnt a worthy challenger as many super GMs would not have held against carlsen. It's just that I feel like Mamedyarov or the ilk would have shorter odds as stylistically he matches up better.

Considering the propensity for draws in high level chess I feel like 12 games are not enough to decide the world champion. It could easily end up with 11 draws and 1 win for either Carlsen or Caruana. Maybe it should be 24 games as it has been in the past although I understand that is a grueling experience for the players.

Caruana has to keep doing what he is doing at least until game 8. If it’s all draws by that time then he will probably have to take a chance with sharper lines.

I personally would have absolutely nothing against a good, old fashioned unlimited match, first to six wins, draws don't count. I also realise that this is not feasible in today's chess world, but the slugfest would be fun to watch for sure.

12 games is definitely too short, though.

Yes...and no. If you go back and look at the games from their first match there were a lot of 20-25 move draws.

FWIW, I see the entire World Championship Cycle as just a 2-year long tournament/match series, like the Grand Chess Tour. The worshiping of the title feels more fetish than sport to me. Since this is not the 1920s, we don't need a series to tell us who the best player is. We can already do that easily with ELO ratings.
