Has he resigned? He's got one legal move but the chess24 board isn't updating.

Never mind. It did, just as I had posted.

Kramnik self rabbit'd himself

I haven't seen a worse choke job since Jimmy Smith in 8 Mile.

That game alone makes the entire tournament worth it. Maybe they are on to something with this "winner take all" structure.

Looks like Candidates Aronian is showing up early in this one. JFC, hard to watch that guy play in the candidates.

Perhaps Caruana has the best nerves this year? Well, I guess Ding has good nerves so far but can't get a decent position so it may not matter.

I couldn't imagine being an Armenian and rooting for him over these years. Holy crap.

Caruana can't be stopped.

He won't be stopped.

Fabiano: I'M COMING FOR YOU MAGNUS!!!!

Thank goodness. Makes the So loss not so bad. TBH I felt Caruana played the best two years ago. Karjakin was a decent amount luckier. Caruana seems clearly superior of the two in general, though. However, Magnus might take the match seriously and smoke him.

Excited for Fabi but there's still a long ways to go.

Looks like a very draw-y day.

Looking forward to Kramnik's presser tonight.

"OK, white has an extra pawn, but surely only black can be better here."
"I was pressing the whole time"
"It seemed almost mating at one point."

Svidler in the live broadcast just now: "By miracle the two pawns on the seventh actually win."

I was rooting for Kramnik and Aronian this tournament, so the last couple days haven't exactly been great. Oh well, now I have to root for Caruana since I'm hoping for good chess in the match.

What about Mamedyarov? Currently in 2nd place and he had a pretty good showing at the recent Tata Steel Masters.

Just saw that. So good. It's like he's completely lost all objectivity. Every game now he makes very impractical decisions and Svidler isn't even attempting to rationalize or guess at the reason I g behind them any longer.

I'm rooting for Mamedyarov. It's not what is right in a "historical" sense, but I think it would produce the most fun chess on average. His performance rating in classical games over the past year has been second only to Carlsen, over a big sample too, so it's also clear that he has elevated his game from that "fringes of the top ten" level to a true "in the mix for #2" shared with a half-dozen others.

Karjakin - Mamedyarov seemed like a pre-arranged draw to me.
